The World Cup of Darts reaches the last 16 from Hamburg's Barclaycard Arena. The format is now the first to 2 wins, with a pair of best-of-7 leg singles matches and a best-of-7 leg doubles decider if required.
Thursday's winners compete in the afternoon, and first up is one of the two big upsetters as South Africa take on New Zealand; Devon Petersen and Vernon Bouwers were very fortunate that Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney and Brendan Dolan played absolutely terrible and bottled multiple match darts. The other surprise package as always is Singapore, and Paul & Harith Lim had Jonny Clayton's complete implosion to thank to dump out the Ferret & Gerwyn Price's Wales to set up a Far East derby with Japan. #2 seeds Scotland again face Scandinavian opposition as Sweden are the latest to face the wrath of Gary Anderson & Peter Wright who averaged over 100 against Denmark. The session ends with a potentially superb affair between Belgium and Germany, who both won 5-1 against Hong Kong and Hungary respectively.
Friday's victors play in the evening, and with no upsets it's the best you could get. Australia take on Canada in the first match of the night, and Simon Whitlock and Kyle Anderson will have to significantly up their game from their last leg shootout with Finland if they're to get past the impressive Canucks who were pushed to the limit by a new-look Italy pair. Austria will also have to vastly improve to avoid an upset by the USA, with Mensur Suljovic and Zoran Lerchbacher combining well to come back from 3-1 down against Russia. England's new pairing of Rob Cross and MIchael Smith completely controlled their game against the Philippines, but Ireland will be a far sterner test. Speaking of newcomers, the Netherlands' Jermaine Wattimena was the star man in their thrashing of Spain, but Poland could spring a surprise in the final match of the day.

Shame there wasn't a single pairs match tonight and only 1 all day.
June 8, 2019 - 20:15
So that's the end of the last 16 with two big upsets tonight.
First of all it was Canada stunning a rather poor Australian pairing, with Dawson Murschell dominating Simon Whitlock in the final leg despite the Wizard hitting back-to-back 126 finishes on the bull. Kyle Anderson however threw away a 3-1 lead and only had 1 further dart at double as Jim Long somewhat made up for his Worlds embarrassment for an historic win.
But that was nothing compared to the stunning 2-0 victory that Ireland recorded over England. Steve Lennon was taken to the last leg by Michael Smith, hitting two bullseye finishes along the way, but disaster struck for Bully Boy as a bull setup on 102 failed twice and he lost the first match. William O'Connor was in no mood for a last leg battle and annihilated Rob Cross 4-1 with a 115.10 average, only needing more than 5 visits to the board in 1 leg. Voltage averaged 106.62, which just shows you how incredibly well the Magpie played.
See you tomorrow at 12:00pm for the last day of the World Cup.
