The Mets like to sign these mega contracts (Wright/Cespedes/Cano soon I’m sure), and take insurance policies out on them, but then not reinvest back into the team after they start collecting the insurance gibs. This makes the Mets look like they’re spending, but in reality their payroll is like $40,000,000 less than what it says on paper since the insured money’s just goes into the Wilpons pocket. For a big market baseball team, they should be spending at least $175,000,000 on talent
