I did the math on this a few months ago because Doyles kept saying he played like guardiola of whatever of the 46 MLS goals the Crew scored in 2018, more goals came from goal keeper drops, fluke deflections, and weird bounces (8) than goals scored in front of the goal from direct passes (6). the Crew were mainly dependent on goals directly from crosses (11) or shots from more than 15 yards, and finished the season with a 1.24 goals per game and a negative gd

I don't understand how this Lima meme happened. Keegan Rosenberry is definitely better than him, and even fits Berhalter's "false right back" meme position better. Not that it matters though, I guess. They're fighting over the fourth spot on the depth chart or whatever.

I think I want to start watching soccer, and I live in Pittsburgh so the Riverhounds interest me, can someone explain the "open cup" and the USL Championship League to me?
Im gonna try and watch the Swope Park/Loudoun game tonight.
Wyatt Robinson
The USL is the de facto second tier in US soccer. It is split into a few tiers itself now (no movement between levels though). It is based and ELITE.
The Openc Up is the big elimination tournament in the US. It's the oldest ongoing soccer competition in the country, started in 1913. Some people consider it as the third part of the US "treble" (along with MLS cup and MLS supporters shield). It's open to any team, amateur or professional. The early rounds start with amateur and low-tier professional teams, and MLS teams enter later.
If you're in Pittsburgh, I'd definitely go to a game if you can. Their stadium is comfy as hell and the view is great.

Gold cup roster is always a bunch of MLS shitters with some no-name yuros thrown in.
Aaron Rogers
That's the only thing that confused me about this roster. I get leaving Amon off; he showed some talent last night, but he also showed that he lacks the maturity to do much with it. Needs more time to develop, the same as Mihailovic.
>"We have set up the roster where there’s two players in every position,” Berhalter said. Sargent would have been a third striker behind Jozy Altidore and Gyasi Zardes. >Berhalter, instead, needed a winger after Sebastian Lletget was ruled out due to a hamstring injury. The head coach, speaking with reporters Thursday, said he saw Lletget as not only a backup attacking midfielder but also depth out wide. If Lletget were fit, he likely would have taken Duane Holmes’ place; he also would have rendered Lewis or Jordan Morris unnecessary, and allowed Berhalter to include Sargent. >“When he got injured,” Berhalter said of Lletget, “it kind of put a wrench in the plans a little bit. And we didn’t feel we could afford to carry three strikers on the roster anymore.”
HERES A SOLUTION TO THIS RIDDLE
DROP JORDAN MORRIS WHO HASN'T DONE ANYTHING FOR TWO YEARS
Austin Kelly
He thinks Morris is a winger (he's shit no matter where he's plays, so who cares), so that wouldn't have solved the issue of not having wing depth.
Cooper Butler
Lima is trash, but in his defense, Jamaica is probably a harder opponent than last year's Minnesota
Camden Bennett
We have 5 CB's. Why not just cut Gonzalez who's fucking shit and now there's a spot for Sargent.
Seriously how does Gonzalez even make the team? He was the shittiest CB behind Miazga, CCV. Zimmerman and Long.

i feel strongly about that too. these guys are literally interchangeable and they are trying TOO hard to find diamonds in the rough when everyone is just mediocre. when you had (somewhat) non-entities like zusi and bedoya at least they were of a higher level and rather serviceable.

so close yet still trying to find some tactical reason instead of realizing the harsh truth
Zardes sells, he's good for marketing, it doesn't matter if he's shit. Thats why Arena had him too. Altidore sells. Morris sells. All three polling high for MLS All Star team. That's why they are in, even if they aren't good enough.
CJ Sapong or Sargent or whoever can score goals til their dick falls off, until he publishers more Instagram stories he won't be on the team
Nobody is going to suddenly get interested in watching MLS because Morris is warming the bench, which he likely will be unless rotation is needed. Zardes actually has more career goals than Sapong, so I'm not sure what your point is with that.
They literally lost to the red bulls C team in the USL playoffs

This MLS vs Euro debate has turned into Democrats vs Republicans, utter nonsense. No one is actually interested in making things better , just advancing their agenda. But I do think that MLS starters are better options than literally who U-20 Bundesliga reserve team Bigsoccer superstars.
It does get ridiculous at times, like people getting outraged over the exclusion of Jonathan "Only Dribbles" Amon and Erik "Struggles to Start for the Worst Team in the Netherlands" Palmer-Brown. I can't wrap my head around the exclusion of Sargent, though. Pulisic, Boyd, Holmes, Arriola, Lewis, Roldan, and even Zardes can all play as wingers, so why was Morris needed so badly? I don't even hate Morris like some people, but it just seems pointless unless Berhalter's planning to use some formation we haven't seen yet.
Brandon Garcia
Ismail Elfath is reffing Italy-Mali in the U-20 wc and he's basically taking a shit directly on the field right now

>But I do think that MLS starters are better options than literally who U-20 Bundesliga reserve team Bigsoccer superstars. That's a stretch but most "euroboos" are angry that the likes of Fabian, Chandler (who is still getting game time at Frankfurt after his injuries) and Morales did not deserve to be ignored for the likes of Lovitz, Lima and Roldan/Trapp/Bradley.
Xavier Nelson
kek, please happen. this would be the ultimate tendie dropping at every usa vs mexico match
yes, it's always been a thing. Idk why it's so surprising that a corporation that handles mls, national team and mexican national team tv rights somehow goes as far as to force those three to intermingle closely for financial gain. Mls owners literally profit from national team games btw.
Christopher Wood
Chandler got years and years to show himself under Klinsy, and never did anything of value He can stay the fuck away from the NT
Charles Jones
Have you seen the clip of him playing? He's literally the next Michael Bradley.
Caleb King
His best season at Frankfurt came after Klinsmann left. I'd rather him as a backup than Nick fucking Lima who is a train wreck for Quacks.
Parker Sanchez
Johnson: Unofficially retired. Berhalter met with him a while ago and left the door open, but he just doesn't want to come back. Would be a great asset, though. Chandler: Douche who doesn't even want to play for us and wasn't good when he did play. The guy has straight up rejected call-ups in the past. Morales: Have you actually watched him? He's not particularly good, and Klinnsmann dropped him in 2015 for Corona.
Julian White
Johnson's probably sick of shuttling from one position to another without settling in anywhere
Eli James
>Have you actually watched him? He's not particularly good He's far better than the likes of Trapp and Roldan. You haven't watched him at all play for Dusseldorf this season when he was consistently starting for them up until April. Trapp and Roldan got manhandled by Jamaican weed farmers, Morales would not have let that happened.
Ian Flores
I have watched him play for Dusseldorf. He's not as good of a passer as Bradley and Trapp and not as tough as McKennie and Adams. I could see bringing him along over Roldan, but it's not as if Roldan is an integral part of the squad; he's the backup for a player who never gets tired. I agree that Trapp really should not have been playing against Jamaica. His main strength is releasing the wingers with good long balls, but he doesn't have anywhere near enough physicality to go up against teams like that.
Gabriel Stewart
>He's not as good of a passer as Bradley and Trapp And? He's good at everything else like actually protecting the backline, aerial duels and fighting for the ball. In an ideal world, it would be Adams as the DM but with Adams (stupidly) as RB, it wouldn't have hurt at all to actually have someone like Morales come in. And Trapp's passing is useless when half the time he's losing and turning over the ball in the middle of the field and exposing the backline over and over again. Again, there was no reason to have Roldan or Trapp in this team over Morales especially given what we've seen of the former two against Jamaica of all teams.
Jace Clark
My point is that there's no compelling reason to bring Morales. He doesn't have the passing of Trapp and Bradley or the physical toughness of McKennie and Adams, and he's equal at best to Bradley physically. The only person who he beats on all fronts is Roldan, but that's such a minor role that I don't think it's anything to be outraged over. The thing that people don't understand about playing Adams at RB is that it actually gives him more freedom than playing as a DM because he can run all over the field fucking people up, which has an additional effect of giving Trapp more time on the ball to pick his passes and disguise his weaknesses. Of course, as Berhalter has said, this only works against teams where we can expect to hold most of the possession. Personally, pic-related would be my general-purpose lineup.
Terrible lineup. No pace from the fullbacks plus they're error prone and there is no way in hell Trappley wont start given Gregg's retarded bias for wanting a shit wannabe regista at the back. Holmes is not a CAM, he's a right sided midfielder and a workhorse, he's not good at distribution.
I was under the impression that Holmes could play there, but just swap him and Pulisic. Doesn't really change what I was going for The only alternatives for LB and RB are Lovitz and Arriola, respectively. They're both faster, but Ream and Lima are the starters regardless for every lineup unless we play Adams at RB or a back 3.
Asher Garcia
very cute cat user
Andrew Myers
>If Altidore goes down (which is likely since he's made of glass and has goften hurt in almost every tournament he's played in) the only back up striker is Zardes.

Justin Cook
Fuck off Doyle and stop fucking your cat
Anthony Green
>muh passing This is a stupid argument to make. There is more to a midfielder than just passing - if we were to disregard Morales for his passing alone then McKennie would also fall into that distinction so why the double standards? It's a fact that Trapp and Roldan are so fucking shit that they cannot handle the press of a single Jamaican USL player like Kevon Lambert. Do you actually think that every team we face in the Gold cup will just play their reserves, sit back and let Trapp pretend to be the American Pirlo that Berhalter has wet dreams about? If Jamaica wasn't afraid to press us, what makes you think Trinidad and Tobago and Panama won't? >muh Adams at RB This just reinforces what I was talking about earlier. Adams is not a natural RB, when he cuts inside as an inverted fullback, he leaves a shit ton of unguarded space. He got away with it against Ecuador because he makes up for it with his energy and pressing and Ecuador played their reserves and benchwarmers but he's not a good fullback - and that isn't his fault because his best games for club and country have always been as a center midfielder hanging out back. Adams at RB will not work when your midfield will be overran just like what happened against Jamaica. McKennie will help a bit but even he can't do everything and cover for Trappley's uselessness.
Caleb Morris
You're completely ignoring what I said in favor of shitting on players that I'm not even praising that much. >if we were to disregard Morales for his passing alone then McKennie would also fall into that distinction so why the double standards I said that McKennie has more physical toughness, and he and Morales have roughly the same passing ability. Thus, McKennie > Morales. My point, as I've stated numerous times, is that Morales doesn't fill any particular niche like the other midfielders. He's basically in the same situation as Canouse. >Do you actually think that every team we face in the Gold cup will just play their reserves, sit back and let Trapp pretend to be the American Pirlo Some teams will let us do that. For the vast majority of games, though, Bradley or Adams will be the superior pick, and I anticipate that Bradley will play far more often than Trapp as a result.
>muh Adams at RB It's only going to be used against shit teams, if at all. Against teams with a shitty offense that like to bunker, what's basically a back 3 of Ream, Miazga, and Long with support from Adams and McKennie is perfectly stable. I'm not a huge proponent of the system as you can see by the lineup I posted, but I think the reasoning behind it is fairly sound.

You mean the same niche that Bradley would fill? I've already said that Trapp shouldn't have been on the field.
You know, for a moment I feared of what Weah could have become. A PSG player, loaned and playing with Celtic at 18 years old. Already playing with the Ninja Turtles. I thought he + Pulisic would have been a nightmare But today, I'll be glad if you can use it every game for the next 20 years
Levi Cruz
Weah is legit. Tab screwed up the midfield today. Pomykal was decent, but Durkin and Mendez were useless.

Its hard to say “well, we didnt play our best players” WHEN WE NEVER FUCKING START THEM
seething we are gonna talk about WWC too try n stop us
Michael Bennett
lol he got appointed by his brother for the express purpose of ensuring he is on board with SUM plans they won't change course
and if things get really bad, like missing the WC again, the board won't face any problems because they will just blame it on Earnie and fire them both
Cameron Ross
>seething not me dude, I love talking about national teams
Meant to make Canada not embarrass themselves in 2026. Right now it's sub-USL quality
Joseph Sullivan
That's me.
Samuel Watson
it needs more MLS teams to move on over
Bentley Hughes
It'd be kind of cool if the Whitecaps just gave up on MLS and moved to CanPL. MLS would need to sell the franchise though, right?
Makes sense. It'd be neat if we didn't suck complete ass in the World Cup.
PFC babey
Caleb Perez
I hope I'm not jinxing anything by saying this, but >our current team is the best team we've had in years, and they could do well in the Gold Cup, hopefully get to a semi-final
Jaxon Parker
Reminder that USSF took a whole year off to jerk themselves off until they finally decided to hire the brother of an exec. And I'm expected to give a fuck about the ninja turtles after that farce?
Matthew Collins
>I'm expected to give a fuck about the ninja turtles no? you just should support our gals
I'm not a soiboy, I have too much self respect to sit there and pretend that amateur level play with a bunch of uggo butch looking lesbos is fun to watch.
Easton Butler
>piss poor soccer isnt fun to watch
then why do you watch MLS?
Zachary Green
Because it's somewhat acceptable right now. Not good, but not terribly bad either.
Nolan Russell
>amateur level play with a bunch of uggo butch looking lesbos show some respect: that's MLS All Star Jordan Morris
Despite the shitshow that was yesterday, was anyone else impressed by Zimmerman and Lima? Zimmerman completed some ambitious forward passes and made several important clearances, and Lima was good defensively and created a lot of chances with his crosses. Even while playing as an inverted RB, none of Venezuela's dangerous attacks came down his side and all of their goals came down the left.
Ryan Bennett
Zimmerman is legit, he should have a spot as a back up for the A team. Lima is decent but not great. I think there are several better options at full back.
le 1/3 season break Zimmerman had a lot of potential, I don't think I've seen anyone doubt him Lima obviously is not first choice, but a fine bench player
It's fucking Aaron Long and Trapp who got absolutely exposed. Long defenders are saying he is recovering from injuries but he's not played a good game. And Trapp didn't even hustle yesterday, which is the very least you could expect of a kid who gets the captains armband.
lose, because Matt Doyle knows absolutely nothing about how soccer is played since he wanted to be a pro-baseballer growing up before developing brittle bone disease and getting mad and socially isolated as his brother was more successful than him, before deciding to become a New York writer but also failing at that and then getting a job doing press releases at MLS 10 years ago at which point he started watching soccer
