Defense is an integral part of defusing the other fighter's clean punching and effective aggression, so I don't see how you can dismiss it from scoring completely. I think it was Harry Greb that infamously won a round without throwing a single punch - it's certainly possible.
Besides, most professional boxing writers covering the event, boxers and color commentators scored the fight for Fury, so unless it was a mass hallucination they take the same criteria that I said into consideration.
