It's not online gaming. It was just the rise of gaming in general. Big corporations got interested with the money that was made, and they just wanted to capitalise and squeeze out any further money they could. Videogames became too profitable, if it wasn't online gaming, they would have found some other way to cheat customers, it's just how they work

Idk for me it's just better. I've never really been that much into online focused series like Madden, 2k, or CoD. I'd rather just play my single player games usually cheaper (those steam sales) with way better graphics and shorter load times. Not to mention game consoles are finally starting to become multimedia devices whereas my computers always have been. Console kids will never know the comfiness of alt tabbing back and forth between your game and a youtube guide for your game.
