Has a player ever actually carried an entire team to win a MAJOR tournament before? Players who carry a team usually can only get so far before collapsing, and most teams that people say get carried are usually filled a player doing well and usually some players that contribute and get ignored.
Has anyone actually full on carried a team to win a major tournament all on their own?
Heres some performances that are amazing but also werent won “single handedly either”
Muh zidane in 98 >Team still won when he was red carded out for a few games >thuram brace in the semis >Henry top scorer >2 of the defenders made the allstar team >doesnt score until the final against a brazil that has had a poisoned ronaldo >goals assisted by petit, who even scored the third goal Muh Cristiano Ronaldo in 2016 >although he tends to have stacked teams in united and madrid, people believe like he single handedly carried Portugal to winning >Barely scrape by group stage >taken to penalties by poland >only attempt by goal in QF is deflected in which quaresma converts to beat croatia >Face wales of all teams in semi >be taken out in the 25th minute of the final >rui patricio and portuguese defense holds down against a french attack >eder scores winner Muh Fatnaldo in 2002 >Backed by rivaldo and ronaldinho >defense with cafu, roberto carlos, and dida as GK >shit easy Group stage with costa rica, china, and turkey >rivaldo and Ronaldinho bail out against England in QF Muh Platini in 1984 >Giresse and tigana midfield to aid out >Domergue brace to even take France into Overtime >goal in final partially made possible by fuckup by Spain’s Goalkeeper

Part 2
Muh Pele in general >Dida golden ball winner in first world cup in 1958 >in general solid team that were winning without him lead by didi and vava >all 3 defenders even made it on the all star team >injured in 1962 and vava and garrincha pick up the slack >one measly group stage goal >1970 >one of the most stacked teams on the planet with rivelino, Jairzinho, gerson, tostao, carlos alberto >Jairzinho scored in every game in the tournament Muh Messi >first UCL barely saw him play any games and score one goal >consistently had solid teams behind him including the core of spanish players that went on to win the world cup without him >won in 2015 with suarez and neymar backing him up >even when he has to carry the team, he can only get so far before being double teamed and getting their shit kicked in the away leg every time. And of course Muh Maradona in 86 WC and Napoli wins >defense only conceded 3 goals prior to the final >forwards included madrid forward valdano who scored 4 and Nantes forward burruchaga who scored the winner >1986 south american team of the year included the GK Nery pumpido, as well as Oscar ruggeri, Sergio batista, and Hector Enrique >core of the team was still comprised of players from river, independiente, and juniors which had all won the Copa Libertadores within the mid 80s >self admitted illegitimate to get passed england >3 assists coming against >korea >Argentina scored 2 from valdano and brown prior to Maradona’s assist in the final >Napoli team also spent shit tons and also backed by De Napoli, Salvatore Bagni, Careca,Alemao, Carnevale and Ciro Ferrera >only scored 3 goals that were all penalties during the UEFA cup run >second scudetto came under shady circumstances >tested positive in doping scandals

Buffon in 2006.
Chase Parker
Messi and Barcelona since Iniesta and Xavi left. Without him they are a horrible team.
Dylan Reed
Yeah
Hunter Carter
I know this seems like circular logic, but it's due to the fact that the team is build around Messi and he seems to have a lot of influence. Horrible club management imho. It's even worse in the argentina nt. Messi is a cancer, if there isn't someone stronger than him. He'd need a Pep, Mou, Zidane or any other manager of that caliber.
Ryan Howard
It's impossible for a player to have that impact if the team backing him up is not up to par. The best example is Cristiano Ronaldo. He's very good in club football because he has top players to support him, but sucks ass in the NT. We only won in 2016 because of very high doses of luck. I believe that we wouldn't have won the final if he didn't get injured. Sure, he carries the NT in a hand full of games, but not a whole tournament. See WC 2018.

Griezmann in 2018
>Scored in the 4-3 against Argentina >Scored and assisted in the 2-0 quarter final against Uruguay >Assisted the only goal in the 1-0 semi against Belgium >Scored in the final and forced an own goal from his cross
If only it weren't for Florentino
Easton Bailey
>tf >tp >tt kys
Ryan Martin
He was our most important player but I wouldn't call that carry
Lincoln Allen
He didn’t exactly carry them in the knockouts mate. He was one of the best players on the team but france was stacked as fuck this WC
Luke Reed
Kaka in Milans UCL win cant remember thw yer. 2007?
Zachary Robinson
maradona

Yashin in '56 and '60.

Of course, the team is made of 11 players, this aint basketball

People like you are the reason this country is fucked

A lot of people say Riquelme in the 2007 Libertadores
I'm not a Boca fan and didn't watch much football back then so I don't know. Can any bosteros around here confirm?
Andrew Hall
faggot
Christopher Carter
Palacio, Palermo and Ibarra were pretty good that season
Charles Lee
Jamie Vardy
Levi Peterson
2007 Riquelme was unstoppable, Team was great, but he was on another level, without him, Boca wouldn't have made it, that's why Milan cried to FIFA in order to deny his chances playing the Club WC. I remember Milan doing this for like 3 or 4 months until they made it. I never saw a legendary club do that for a sudaca player. It was such a pussy move...
Luke Phillips
Its either that or having the other flags throw a hissy fit over me calling it soccer. Get over it,
Dylan Taylor
>Burruchaga and Valdano score in the world cup final >Maradona is GOAT
>Higuain and Palacio miss in world cup final >Messi is not GOAT
Luis Watson
Mahrez won PFA player of the year, and the team collapsed after Kante left as well
Lucas Cox
Griezmann had a stacked ass team, including mbappe who won young player of the tournament, and solid defense from varane, and depending on who you are, he also had to take the giroudpill
Ayden Watson
MY NAME IS DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA AND I WANT TO WIN THE WORLD CUP.
Lucas Price
2007 saw a great kaka run, but Inzaghi scored a brace in the final, Maldini and Nesta is an all time great defensive duo, and crucial goals from Seedorf as well, the team in general was pretty solid. Also a piss easy group stage helps.
Anthony Thomas
literally no one ever says ronaldo singlehandedly carried 2002. The seleção of 2002 was one of the most stacked squads of ALL time, yes, including clubs and other NTs. People still to this day argue that rivaldo should've been elected as the best player of that WC
Xavier Miller
dude, there was an italian defender that got the FIFA's best player of the year. There's absolutely no way buffon worked alone in that WC
Chase Diaz
At least he called by the right name
Brody Barnes
Maradona for Napoli. They haven't won the Scudetto since he left. They won it twice with him.
Liam Rogers
Charisteas in 2004 m8
Evan Bell
France weren't carried by a player, but by FIFA and their asymmetrical application of VAR
Andrew Rivera
Cannavaro got that award for a criminally good season with Juventus. He played well at the World Cup, but Buffon was the key to the team. See, for example:
He wasnt the only solid player on that team, he elevated the team but he also had other names to help back him up, also the second scudetto came under shady circumstances
Jack Davis
>player x carried team y, he was clearly the biggest contributor to their success by a wide margin and they almost certainly couldn't have won without him >UHHH ACKCHUALLY, SOME OTHER PLAYERS ON TEAM Y DID SOMETHING OTHER THAN STAND AROUND SUCKING THEIR THUMBS, THEREFORE THEY WEREN'T CARRIED You're just being too harsh in your requirements. "Carrying" a team doesn't require that everyone else is useless. In fact such a team could never win a football match, let alone a tournament.
Liam Jenkins
>they almost certainly couldn't have won without him But that could be said of a lot of players in a 11-men team, even in "legendary" runs by a star players
Ayden Wilson
He was the only player that mattered. Everyone else could be substituted and no one would give a fuck.
Camden Carter
yes and it is mostly always the goalkeeper
Matthew Ortiz
nice try satan
Wyatt Hill
Alex Ferguson carried a small club (Manchester United) to every success they ever had.
Wyatt Cruz
ronaldo unnironically carried Portugal to the final, and even more so out of the gs in the wc in russia the defense only started being good past the gs in 2016, and the rest of the team could do nothing apart from ronaldo
