We did do a rather good job with our colonies but we also worked together with Britain quite a bit when it comes to colonial dealings. They did fairly well though, Rhodesia and South Africa were definitely the most successful successor states of colonial regions until black people took over. Nigeria today might be a shithole when compared with most nations on the planet but it's an African power house and Egypt was an alright colony as well. Brits and Germans had similar ideas in regards to handling colonial holdings and it shows. You can only do so much though.
