Do you always use them, or only on really long rides? I've never used gels, but now that I am doing much longer rides I notice that a ride >5 hours I seem to become unable to eat solid food, my body doesn't want it. Perhaps gels will be easier to consume at that point

Gels are good because you can consume them in a few seconds and get the energy quickly.

Buy maltodextrine + fructose in bulk. Use it as mix for you bottles or inside of a reusable gel flask. Much cheaper.

Gels, granola bars and bananas with cola/energy drinks are bretty good for long rides. Gels and bars you can put in your pockets and bananas and drinks with caffeine are available in every shop along the road usually. Use iso-drinks during the ride and you're good.

In Nip-land they make energy gels that are just red bean paste lol. So I usually just end up buying and eating red bean mochi for endurance rides. They are small and have a good amount of carbs, easy to digest etc.
