Offense is the best defense in football, especially if your center backs are Laporte and Stones. Instead of conceding a decent amount of the pitch, Pep should urge his players to push high like in the Premier League. That way his mediocre (compared to other big teams) backline won't have to do so much work.

This works easily against weak teams. You can't rely on never having to do any defending against good teams. They will avoid your press. They will counter attack effectively. They will have enough possession that you have to form a regular defensive structure.

Anyway I expect City will improve next year by signing a left back and CB.
