It's why Maddon pulled Hendricks in the 9th, because he was going to face Votto for a 4th time and you don't want him to start something. Which was exactly what happened yesterday. But yes, it relies on the bullpen not shitting the bed, and the pen has already caused the cubs to lose 4 of their 15 games by giving up the lead in the 8th or ninth inning.
