For me, it's 4123 with minimal instructions. I used to be 'that' guy who had about 20 instructions.
I just don't like 3/5 at the back formations and find isometric formations too complicated.

How come you use inverted wing-backs?

having wingers and regular wingbacks/fullbacks is fucking pointless, the fullbacks just do the same duty but worse. so if you want to use wingers you need to IWB, and if you want to use wingbacks then you should use inverted wingers/forwards, it just improves spacing in attack. I dont like inverted attackers too much, wingers are much more effective because crosses are OP, and IWB are supremely useful because theyre essentially 2 more midfielders, which is huge.

Yeah I usually use IF's with wing-backs as I've usually found wingers to be shit.
I'll experiment with IWB's and wingers tho.

With a AF, you better believe your team will hoof into space regardless of what you tell them. No real reason to play wide with so many roles that already go wide by design. Being more disciplined with being Cautious makes little sense: they're already going to be more disciplined.

The AI doesn't build tactics, and if it were building tactics the AI doesn't build them around a given player like Messi, Ronaldo, or any striker with insane scoring stats. Therefore he cannot score as much as IRL. He'd need a good 6 attempts per match at the very least to have "realistic" scoring figures.

The other managers in the game use tactics though.

Essentially nothing critical, a couple points here and there in his best attributes. It's not going to make him much quicker or more rounded give his attribute spread: very average Technique, Vision, Passing, Dribbling makes him unfit as a BPD or Half Back, and his very average Pace+Acc will be somewhat annoying if you desire to play a high line. It's not going to prevent him from being a very solid world-class defender in a team that doesn't need its defenders to be good on the ball.

He's 17 and already at 159 CA? Always knew they put weird shit in the water over in West Germany. Anyways, quickness and so on are usually very expensive attributes. Might want to make sure that he doesn't work on that.

Thanks. I use third party programs when I'm bored to basically speed up scouting, when you're scouting 20 people with your 10 scouts, you get bored waiting. 159 is fucking insane for a 17 year old. He's essentially top tier. I dunno what CA is needed for world class, I guess 175+? He's nearly world class.

I do both. I usually find somebody with a program looking at their CA/PA then I scout them and see what my scouts say. Remember, they might be 200PA but doesn't mean they'll reach 200CA. I don't think it's even possible if they're 100CA and 200CA, even if they're 15. You'd need 20/20 Training and 20/20 Youth, with 7* training in every area to get even close.

It would be zero fun to do that. You could, but you just accept that sometimes shit doesn't pan out. Some players don't develop for random™ reasons, some players are good but won't get much better than they currently are. It's part of the game™: you have to scout a lot, and accept a few duds.

To give you some perspective, I had a situation like that: I had to choose between two Romanian wonderkid CBs. Because of some reasons, Romanian players were rather expensive. They were quite equivalent on paper, so I picked the slightly more capped one. He didn't make a lick of progress in a year, so when I received a good offer I sold him and fortunately I bought the other one, who did develop. After I was done with the same, turns out the former CB had no PA left to make any progress while the other guy still had margin to make progress. You accept it and move on.

2bh, even without Genie Scout I would've never spent a cent on a defender that good that is not good on the ball. Attribute spread isn't something you can fix with more training: even with insane potential, shit spread is shit. I could buy a shit load of guys like him anywhere at any time.

That's cheating and no fun. If you've played the game for long enough you spot the good players and the bad ones. Obviously it also has something to do with scouting ability. I know that in FM14 German youth was totally overrated trash for example.

You want to have a good understanding of what kind of attributes cost the most and how they affect the overall rating. Usually acc and pace are really expensive. As an example:
A young CM who would be similar to a deep-lying playmaker has really high accel and pace values and a high rating. Basically unless he already has very good passing, creativity and other important attributes for his type you want to most likely hold off. On the other hand, you might have a player with an average sort of rating but above average stats for his age. He could still develop into a really good player, despite his actual PA.
This is something that comes with experience to be honest.

Nay. Youth coaching does that for PA, with youth recruitment affecting PA. I treat HoYDs as a glorified coach+scout combo. Their personality can absolutely have an influence on the personality of the players in the intake. Heard that their favourite formations also affect in which positions players are generated, but I've found that much less obvious.

Germany still has the second highest Youth Rating in FM at 155, just behind Brazil's 163. In reality, the facilities are so much better than German youngsters tend to be of higher quality than HUEs... but also much more likely to just rot in the reserves when they're poached by big clubs. Honestly, even Italy (144), Spain and France (140) still generate plenty good youngsters even with a measurably lower YR.

Like this guy. He's probably going to hit his PA soon, which is most likely pretty average, and he would never show up on a scout list of good clubs. That being said, despite the fact that he is missing some physicals and a few mentals he can still be a rock if the rest of his points go into the right mentals. I've bought plenty of this sort of material for cheap and put him next to a really good CB at a top club. Pretty much always works. Not to mention that you can easily sell them to some rich club after a few seasons.

Depends how filthy rich you are. First, you need the packages because SI said so. You could start by scouting U18 NTs from countries with good youth ratings. You could also scout clubs known for their youth setup: GNK Dinamo, ASEC Mimosas, clubs like that. Obviously hire scouts with vast knowledge: Swedes know a lot about Scandinavia, Murrifats generally also have good knowledge, Russkies have excellent knowledge of ex-USSR countries. Just scouting a given country isn't always the best solution if it's big and/or you know where to look at.

You can take a look at this scouting guide. It's for an old version of FM, but besides the scouting package nonsense it's still worth reading.

Forgot to sya, I signed a scout who was 100% in England, Brazil Uruguay and Mexico. With decent in Spain and USA. If I spend him to USA, that'll improve his knowledge or Spain? I was gonna send him to Spain until I could send him to Brazil. I've sent him off to Spain to try and find good Under 21's. Hopefully it'll work.

I'd say it matters more, but with the scouting revamp you're not going to find jack shit in LLM with scouting. Just trial everything for a few weeks, and keep whatever looks promising. It's very gamey, but I also really fucking hate SI's scouting revamp and that's essentially the only way to know if a player is good if you don't have a single cent to your name. If you're really rich it doesn't matter since you can buy what you need, but if you don't have much money, scouting is the name of the game.

For example, see pic related. It's a bit of an unfair comparison since he's older and therefore has way better mentals, but Laurent Koscielny has 156CA. And he's much, MUCH better rounded than that young CB technically and is faster. Shave 3 or 4 points out of all of Koscielny's attributes on a 17 years old, and even 5 on his mentals and I would consider buying a lot more than your guy. And he'd be likely to be cheaper.

Of course you're very unlikely to find a youngster that's as well rounded as most "real" players in the db with evenly spread attributes, but with experience you'll notice quickly who to buy and who not to.

Innate knowledge is definitive, scouted knowledge is temporary. So if you send a French guy to Spain, he'll learn about Spain, but if you send him elsewhere he'll lose that knowledge over time. However a Spaniard will always retain his knowledge of Spain. Which is why having a wide variety of nationalities in your scouting staff, even with rather average if not outright poor attributes, is more important than having a staff that has exclusively has scouts with 15+ JPA/JPP/Det/Adaptability but from only one or two countries.

True, I've just always done everything in-game so I never realized how much potential variation there could be in a 5 star rating. I get that there are winners and losers but I never reached the level of pickiness you practice.

On top of that 19 has an additional numerical rating and after scouting the top dozen players according to scout genie for fun I found that they were all given scores in the 70s. I had previously set my reports to exclude players under 80...so yeah. I'm gonna go back to pretending like that program doesn't exist

You don't have to be ultra picky, but there's some stuff that's easy to fix and some that isn't. Teaching a defender how to pass is like teaching a striker how to mark and tackle: it's not impossible but way harder. Prolly not the best image but I think you get what I mean. Likewise, a good player with a trash personality like Casual or Fickle isn't worth a single cent. That's like buying Balotelli and expecting him to give a fuck for more than 4 months and not complaining all the time. Ironically real players cannot have shit personalities in FM because reasons, but the idea' the same.

Have a 4-4-2 diamond system where the bottom of the diamond plays as half back and the two fullbacks play as complete wingbacks (attack) and it seems to be working decently so far. Have your width set a bit wider so that your centerbacks are space out to half spaces to make room for your half back to tuck back into a back three on defense

I'd say in FM, it's too obvious when a young striker is going to get good. They're good everywhere and tend to become CFs all the time. You rarely have different profiles of world-class strikers like an AF or a TM: they're all CFs. Same with your guy: good everywhere. So don't forget to give him five year contracts.

Why don't players under 17 ever show up on scout assignments? Even when I order a focus on players 15-17 The youngest that get scouted are 17. Does it have something to do with them having signed a pre-contract and therefore considered unavailable?

Most likely tho' I'm not sure. Could be that your scouting setup or your view excludes players that are unlikely to want to join: unless they're free you're unlikely to be able to buy them straight out of the intake due to them being very biased towards signing with their first club, so maybe your scouts are ignoring them. I'm not sure of what I've written though, I don't see why they wouldn't actually show up.

On one of the last FMs [either 19 or 18] the cracked version enters in an infinite loop on launch if you use custom databases, that's why I'm asking.

Must be FM19. It's not an infinite loop since it loads eventually, albeit after a long ass time. SI disabled database compression in the early versions of FM19 for some reason, and 19.1 absolutely hates uncompressed databases. They fixed that eventually, but pirates are out of luck. Well, except if they manually put the option to compress dbs back in the Editor and compress everything. Or DL the latest Editor alongside the demo for FM19 and use the newer one instead. And yes, I did both.

You'd need to browse the official forum and know what you're looking for. The 19.1 Editor is a flaming piece of shit. It manages to be worse than the previous ones, which is a feat in itself. No surprise no one bothered with it. But I can tell you that either saving with the most recent Editor or compressing the data with the tweaked 19.0/19.1 Editor does fix the loading times. And if you have NOTHING to do, you can also just wait for huge amounts of time. Even if compressing the data on each file individually is annoying, the wait isn't worth it 2bh.

really depends on what youre trying to do, and whether you know what youre doing, and whether your changes are coherent. people just dont get that instructions are merely tweaks and tendency adjustments, and your team wont just waste possession for example if you dont tell them to "retain possession", and they'll look for fullbacks even if you dont tell them to look for overlap.

people usually dont understand that theyre merely an adjustment to make things that already happen more common, so they pick literally every single shout that they agree with, even if the team manages a good balance in that area without the shout, leading to complete overkill and bad tactics.

Opposition had 22 shots and 12 were on target. I should have scored one goal with my 14 shots. I have the worst defence with 13 goals conceded in 6 games with only 7 scored and a pass completion of 69%. I'm currently 8th and predicted to finish 10th in League of Ireland.

finishing is not even among the top 3 most important attributes for a striker.

I really really like your formation. Change team fluidity to fluid, and the role of your striker to an AF at least, or something that is more involved in build-up play. try putting the AP a bit further away from the IW to not bunch up your attackers. Change your mentality to counter, and tell your team to retain possession. 4-1-4-1 needs a slow, steady, controlled and generally risk-averse approach to give your team time to move up the pitch collectively, as your team generally doesnt have enough attacking outlets to attack fast. you need your team to work its way up slowly.

actually, i just realized that your IW isnt even right-footed. Just turn him into a regular winger, and make kirk an IWB. give at least one of your IWB a defensive duty. try closing down more, you should have the numbers advantage in defence to get away with being out of position at times.

apart from that, go to the part of the tactics menu where you can analyze your season so far and look at how you concede goals. whats the most frequent assist type? where are your teams weaknesses? try to adress those

lel no, CF is the ultimate role for stikers, its the most complete, the one in which players do more different things, contribute more to your playstyle and give more solutions to the team. A CF can be a playmaker or a target man or a finisher depending on what the play needs them to be.
