Griezman is world class man, and he's never played with someone with the playmaking talents of Messi before. He's going to absolutely flourish. And ever since the Neymar transfer, player costs have inflated dramatically. 140m is what it costs now just to get an upper tier player.

There is more to a player than his ability. Timo Werner is world class too, maybe not quite Griezmann but he would be half the price and much younger, so would some like like Nicolas Pepe. The whole squad needs improvement so why blow your load on one player?
