You have no established history nor see it as an institution so it's seen as a fringe sport. Add to that how it's also viewed as mostly a "foreign" sport so xenophobia plays a role in lack of acceptance.

Football is ridiculously easy to play since all you need is a ball and something to mark the goal. No equipment, no special field. America could be a world leader at it because it already has the wealth for the facilities and the infrastructure to track down and nurture talent but because of the above points it'll be some time before it does that, if it even does.

The FA needs to set out a clear ideology of how they want the national team to play in 5 years time or so, set up the right schemes, academies and coaches to implement it. It doesn't really work if you have 100 different youth teams and academies all teaching something different, or just teaching bad football in general.
English youth football has really changed in the last 10 years, we see a lot more focus on nice one touch footy played across the floor, encouraging coaching methods, a lot of football cages with modern synthetic turf rather than playing 4 4 fucking 2 on a muddy field with a fat coach screaming abuse at the kids, and now we are seeing the benefits at the national team level.

If I'm not mistaken, football is one of the top sports for youngsters to practice and play in US and A. I think the reason youngsters don't really go for it is that the "american" sports are a lot more sponsored insitutionally, like college programs and high school programs that football kind of gets left behind, sadly.
