Why is Russia comparatively bad at football compared to other countries? I feel like they've been spending more in recent years and it's the most popular sport, but where's the progress? Is it just climate? I'm from Belarus originally, and we couldn't play a lot out of the year, of course, but that was back in the impoverished '90s. You'd think that with futsal and more spending on indoor stuff, Russia would have gotten better, and yet they just haven't.

climate is everything. its a mentality, history, economcis(geography). so of course thats a huge factor.
(but iceland in 2016-2018 escaped that, also partly because they are close to UK and coaches-players have UK ties)

Russia is a solid 2nd tier European team. Probably around the same level as the likes of Denmark, Sweden, Ukraine, Wales etc.

If you look at those Soviet teams, a ton of the players were from George and especially Ukraine, where it's considerably warmer, which I think supports my climate theory.

I watched most Ru games from 08, they did good in that Euro where they reached semi final and blew Sweden and edged Nederlands. 2014 poor discipline v Algeria and Belgium,2018 Rus was an improvement.
Generally speaking, East Europe teams that are not south like Serbia, rely more on their good survivalist genetics to withstand harsh situations. Tactics and fluidity like german and spanish teams they do not possess. Tough mofos though, if they had warmer climate like Serbia and Hrvaatsk they couldve performed better

Hardly leads to playing football. Something every pro players talks about is when they were young they’d spend hours each day of the week all year round kicking a ball around outside in the back garden, street, local parks etc. Just spur of the moment stuff.

Also consider the following, all the goat football nations are densely populated. Italy, Germany, England, France etc all have 80 million odd people living in a relatively small country.
Brazil is massive BUT, most of the population lives in a handful of urban areas near the coast, and it’s warm as fuck so they play all year round unlike Russia.

It's more like hot, everything in North and close to this line (like Rio were I live, place were increasingly rarely 20 C winter peasant days is rare year to year, is considered so cold, no kidding, some people wear heavy winter clothes like scarfs) of this line is fucking hell, 30 C year around days, in close this line like Rio it's really hell during ouctuber to April (and counting now) only highlands places like São Paulo have decent climate, South Brazil have climate like Australia, they have seasons, pretty cold winter's, but hellish summers, it's funny because people think Australia is warm country, but in reality it's pretty cold to Brazil standards. Krasnodar have the best academy in terms of infrastructre and desire to deliver, they are really ahead of other teams. They hire young coaches, send them to Europe etc. also their owner is one of few rich people in russia who made billions on anyything aside from gas/oil/gold/diamonds or(and) friendship with Putin's clan

Maybe only rich people that life near beachs and can't work (well, lot of unemployment here) and people can expend 24 hours in room with AC (like I'm NEET of upper middle class parents) but still shit, different of Australia and USA first world countries, electric bills is so expansive and we not have central AC (only ultra rich people), just go to toilet and SPECIALLY cooking is pure suffering. I wouldn't say it's bad tho and we have some (very slow) progress. But of course it also depends on the money invested in sports and our weather too, we can't play outside all year long. But yes there is progress and new people come to this sport open academias etc. Last year's WC gave a huge boost in popularity of footy here so I hope we see an improvement in the long run.
