I think one of the reasons is lack of facilities. In places where basketball is popular like America and Eastern Europe pretty much every single school from primary to secondary has its own full size indoor basketball court, basketball courts are standard with community centers as well. I doubt that is the case with the UK and other European countries where basketball is non-existent. Any bong care to chime in on this theory??

i can't speak for other schools and it wasn't strictly used for basketball, but it was a large gym that had 2 nets on opposite sides and another 6 on the side walls. i imagine most schools had the same, it's also funny to me that before school started in the morning they would open the gym for anyone wanting to mess around and shoot the basketballs. i went there a few times and like all 10 of all the black people at my school were there shooting it.

Football is generally about long duration endurance with the occasional sprint, basketball is all about explosive strength and more akin to interval cardio. It's true that in basketball you might get away with not being incredibly fit and fast (depends on what position you play and what role you have), but that doesn't mean it's not an athletic sport.

There is no funding. Among other things, like lack of interest, if there is no money, there is no sport. UK pushed some pounds into it for the Olympics and the NT did decently in the Europeans (FIBA told them they need to shape up if they wanted to be in the Olympics as hosts) and they did not suck in the Games. They cut the funding shortly afterwards when the NT did not qualify for the WC, if I remember correctly, and the GB team project disappeared, and with them any expectations of bringing the game to the club level.

It is not a matter of being a richer or poorer country, it is a matter of infrastructure inside the sport. Spain dedicates a lot of money to basketball from the federation, the NT did very well in the mid 80s and the league bloomed thanks to that, TV money got into the competition, and teams got better players and improved their youth systems. The federation kept funding their youth system too, and thanks to that we got players like Gasol, Navarro, Reyes, Rubio, Rudy, etc...
It was just a matter to get a Team GB competitive enough to get a good result in a tournament (a semi, a final) and get the public to get behind the team.
