For someone interested in getting into tennis, what are the differences between series and is there some sort of equivalent in other sport (for example Champions League, World Cup etc).

I'm assuming Wimbledon is the equivalent of a world cup as in the largest event but what about Davis Cup, Fed Cup and regular ATP? Are the other grand slams a step below Wimbledon?

There are basically 3 word cups every year with the 3 Grand Slams and the US Open pretending to be one.

First thing, there are two pro circuits: the men’s tour (ATP) and the women’s tour (WTA). Now, on the men’s, there are the following categories for tournaments, in decreasing order of prestige and points given:
>Grand Slams (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open)
>ATP Finals (end of the season tournament for the top 8 players in rankings)
>Masters 1000 (nine tournaments in total)
>ATP 500 (like 12 iirc)
>ATP 250
There’s also the ITF circuit, that is lower than this and gives even less points but is a good starting point for young players (also shitters below rank 250 and 40 year old dinosaurs that are way past retirement). But they kinda changed it for this year, or something, who cares.
The women’s tour is basically the same except that their Masters aren’t called that and are divided in two categories (Mandatory and Premier 5), and they have two year end finals, like the UCL and the UEL.
Each tour oversees their tournaments, except for the Grand Slams, that are not governed by the ATP or the WTA, but by the ITF (kinda, they are also not entirely under its direct control either). The ITF is basically the FIFA of tennis, but with much less power, and besides the Slams and the ITF circuit it also oversees the Olympic tennis tournaments, and the annual national competitions: Davis Cup (men’s), Fed Cup (women’s) and Hopman Cup (mixed) - the latter is a glorified exhibition at the beginning of the year, tho.

Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious Slam, it’s been a major since before the other three were even considered as such (1925), and being the only big tournament still played on grass adds to the whole thing. It’s the only slam that has been continuously been held on the same venue.
The USO is played on hard court, is the second oldest slam, and has the biggest tennis stadium as main court. Gives the biggest prize money, and has notoriously noisy and obnoxious crowds.
The French Open, Roland Garros, is the main clay tournament in the tour. It has a lot of tradition in spite of being younger than wimbly or us, and it’s prone to crowning a lot of one-time champions or to being utterly dominated by clay specialists, thus you’ll find most of the all time greats having won it between 0-2 times. It has a shit small venue, still has no roofs or artificial lights, and its crowds are even more awful than the Americans. For like its first 30 years it was only open to French players.
The AO is the youngest (1905) slam, and for a long time most non-Aussie top players didn’t care about it even though it was a major, due to flight distances, shit time zone, shit venue, shit prizes and shit placement on the season schedule (it was originally played on December). It got an overhaul in the late 80s, being moved to January, changing from grass to hard in a bigger venue, and increasing prizes, and it’s probably got the best organization and venue of all Slams now.

tl;dr rate them as you will, but Wimbly and AO are first and last overall respectively

I know that they have their own qualification rounds for stuff like Wimbledon but surely there has to be some form of "pre-qualification" for being able to enter the qualification rounds?

No. Players enter tournaments in one of the following ways:
>being on the entry list
>advancing from a qualification pre-tournament
>being awarded a wild card (invitation)
>lucky loser
For the entry list, it’s made from the top players in the ranking that have announced/agreed/not declined to take part in the tournament. Wild cards are berths that the tournament reserves for players they want to invite for X reason that didn’t make into the entry reason for Y reason. Qualies usually take place on the few days before the main tournament starts and are comprised of lower-ranked players competing to get in the main draw. And lucky losers are players that didn’t advance from the last round of the qualy that get to enter anyway because a main draw player dropped before the first round match. So, you see, it has nothing to do with advancing from a lower tier event - they’re separate events that give more or less points per participation.
The Davis Cup is a team tournament that involves singles and doubles matches and is played in scattered weeks around the year. It doesn’t give points and isn’t organized by ATP so yeah, it’s it’s own thing. Instead of rankings, it groups nations by zones and groups (for example, the Americas Zone, which has Group I, II and III). And this one does have a promotion/relegation system, in which a nation can advance according to its performance until they reach G1 of their zone, from which they advance to the World Group, which is the one that actually contests the Davis.

the ATP1000, 500, 250 are the number of points a player gets if they win the tournament. the more you win, the more points you have. the more points you have, the higher your ranking is. so your ranking helps decide whether or not you get direct entry to a tournament or if you have to go through qualification or try to get a wild card (invite) for the tournament. grand slam winner gets 2000 btw

not everyone gets a wild card. a tournament reserves the right to decide who gets a WC. if a tournament is being held in Stockholm, the Swedish players will get top priority for the wild card. so they might give two WCs two Swedes and then the others might be given to young players who're rising quickly through the ranks, top-ranked players who are coming back from injury and could use a boost, or some international players from other countries whose countries have made deals with Sweden so they when those countries are hosting tournaments, Swedish players get a couple of WCs for their tournaments, etc.

oh siht it got deleted. there's two draws: main draw and qualifying draw. the main draw has players whose rankings are good enough to get into the tournament directly. and the qualifying draw is obvious. so the tournament has a bunch of WCs to give to players for both draws. they give some players a WC to enter the qualifying draw and others get WCs giving them direct entry to the main draw. again the tournament decides who gets main draw WC and who gets WC for the quallies

As the Aussie said, the draws are determined by the rankings. Also, there is also the player’s commitment issue: barring injury or other major issues, the top 30 players of the ranking must play 8 of the 9 M1000 tournaments (only Monte Carlo isn’t mandatory), and four ATP 500 (at least one of them after the US Open). The commitment for the player is lessened by one (1) M1000 for each of the following:
>600 career matches
>12 years in the tour
>at least 31 years of age
If a player meets all three of these, he’s no longer bound to the commitment and can skip whatever tournament he wants.

omg i just googled and that happen to be Linda Fiorentino. That super cute brunette from Dogma and Men in Black. (just like with Weaver, did not seen her as pretty when i was 10-20, only recently my eyes opened... or i just did not pay attention when i was eleven years old)
