League system is better than knockout but there are some subtelties you have to look out for.

For example in a league a player who is a beast against against midtable and bottom teams is more valuable than a player who shows up in big games.

What's the point you are trying to make? City have already won a knock out tournament and are in the final of another this season.

Most (all?) countries already have a tournament with a playoffs format. And theres at least one major international cup per continent with that format as well. The league is the league, it’s a traditional format that most people like. I don’t know what’s up with North Americans and their dislike for tradition. You get points for winning and nothing for losing, and there’s also relegation. It’s not bad. See you can’t talk shit about any country’s league when your teams benefit from losing and they’ll purposely tank if they see they can’t make the playoffs.

The league format is less exciting, but it’s more fair. It’s much more difficult to be good for 38 games compared to the Champions League’s 13 games.

There is a real issue with the league format when the league doesn’t have a salary cap implemented. The money will eventually inflate to a point where 85-90% of the teams become irrelevant as far as the title chase goes. Something like Leicester City is a once in a lifetime occurrence. For virtually every team in the country, it doesn’t matter you smart your front office or how well you develop players. Your team has no chance of winning the league.
