Anybody who understands the game could see from the very beginning of the year (yes, when we we’re winning) that nothing had changed, that the systems (or lack thereof) were the same. This has by far been the most frustrating year of Leafs hockey that I have watched because it was a carbon copy repeat of last year. Same mistakes, same outcome, no adjustments or anything to address our shortcomings from last year (from the coaching staff and despite many roster improvements).
This team has the skill and goaltending to have won a cup this year if they weren’t being constantly handicapped. They consistently look less than the sum of their parts and for the second season in a row they have been bounced early as a result. What a waste of a season. I don’t care how good they are at times. They have the raw talent and goaltending to succeed despite the handicaps imposed on them by the coaching staff. Again, this was obvious throughout the year and is the reason that they have exactly zero consistency.
It would be nice next year if these conversations can be had even if the team is winning (assuming they have the same issues). There are more nuances in the game beyond ‘Win = Unequivocally Good’ and ‘Lose = Unequivocally Bad’. Over the past two years the Leafs have won a lot of games, but if you watch them they pretty much never dominate the play and are usually giving up a lot of chances but are bailed out by stellar goaltending. The raw talent provides the scoring a lot of times in ways that appear out of nowhere because they are simply that good. Success is relative, and these past two seasons this team has been forced to play at around 80% of their potential because of their coaches.
This was such a winnable series and a legit cup contending year, and especially one with a manageable salary cap situation and it was wasted.
By the way, even if we managed to win this game I would feel the same way.

I’m sick of being a laughing stock of hockey. I’m sick of people who have never watched hockey telling me about how bad the Leafs are, and how the Leafs losing is “typical Leafs”. I’m sick of the fact that every single fucking year I tell them “No it’s different this time because _________!” I’m sick of every single fucking year that difference not mattering and these people who know nothing about hockey asking me “I thought you said it was different this time?” Because at the end of the day who really knows more about hockey? I’m some delusional fan who gets my hopes up every year and every year this team disappoints me. When people say “typical Leafs”, what success do I have to point to to prove them wrong?
I hate how on paper we’re the better team. But we’re not, are we? Boston finished ahead of us in the standings. Boston beat us in the playoffs. We played some great hockey in the playoffs but at the end of the day none of that matters because we’re not playing hockey again until September. And what do we have to show for it? Some memes fresh off the press, and the all too familiar feeling we have right now.
They’ve officially broken me. I’ve never felt like this after a loss before. I’ve been in a foul mood since Sunday afternoon and it looks like that’s here to stay for the time being. I’ve never been angry about a loss for more than a day, not even last year. I feel so defeated. Have you ever been so frustrated that all you want to do is cry? I’ve only ever been that frustrated a handful of times in my life, and 0 of those times were as seemingly meaningless as a sports team. Maybe I’ll feel different by the time October comes, because that’s a long ways away, but right now I don’t know if I want to regularly watch this team anymore. My moods are literally dictated by the outcomes of games. I feel like it’s not the coaching or the players, it’s literally the team.

Let me preface this by saying I’m from Chicago, I grew up watching the Cubs, Blackhawks, Bulls and Bears, HOWEVER my step mother is from Canada, ever since a young age I’ve been a secondary Leafs fan, I root for the Leafs unless against the Hawks.
I’ve been waiting for as long as you guys for the Leafs to do something, to be good, to hire a good staff and have prospects bloom into superstars.
Right now isn’t the time to call for peoples heads, we’re all emotional and level headed decisions aren’t really made when you’re emotional.
Now I just wanted to say the Cubs went through all this, for 108 years to be exact. Over the last 5-6 years our prospects have bloomed, we got a good coach, we built a young core and made improvements where they were needed. The Leafs have ALL this. Babcock is one of the greatest coaches out there, they’ve got a really good young core and it’s year 3 of a slated 5 year rebuild. Improve the defense and the Leafs will be a team to really be scared of. They played better all series but just couldn’t grasp the clincher. This “curse” WILL end and when it does you will all be extremely happy that you stuck around and it’ll be even more sweet and memorizing.
Basically wanted to say I’ve seen this all too much with the Cubs, hang in there and you’ll be rewarded, when you are you’ll be living in the clouds.

Anybody who understands the game could see from the very beginning of the year (yes, when we we’re winning) that nothing had changed, that the systems (or lack thereof) were the same. This has by far been the most frustrating year of Leafs hockey that I have watched because it was a carbon copy repeat of last year. Same mistakes, same outcome, no adjustments or anything to address our shortcomings from last year (from the coaching staff and despite many roster improvements).
This team has the skill and goaltending to have won a cup this year if they weren’t being constantly handicapped. They consistently look less than the sum of their parts and for the second season in a row they have been bounced early as a result. What a waste of a season. I don’t care how good they are at times. They have the raw talent and goaltending to succeed despite the handicaps imposed on them by the coaching staff. Again, this was obvious throughout the year and is the reason that they have exactly zero consistency.
It would be nice next year if these conversations can be had even if the team is winning (assuming they have the same issues). There are more nuances in the game beyond ‘Win = Unequivocally Good’ and ‘Lose = Unequivocally Bad’. Over the past two years the Leafs have won a lot of games, but if you watch them they pretty much never dominate the play and are usually giving up a lot of chances but are bailed out by stellar goaltending. The raw talent provides the scoring a lot of times in ways that appear out of nowhere because they are simply that good. Success is relative, and these past two seasons this team has been forced to play at around 80% of their potential because of their coaches.
This was such a winnable series and a legit cup contending year, and especially one with a manageable salary cap situation and it was wasted.
By the way, even if we managed to win this game I would feel the same way.

Imagine adding a top 10 center to your team and having another year of development for your core only to finish in literally the exact same way as the previous season due to the exact same errors.
Watching what the Isles have done with Trotz is making me so envious. They lose their best player, pick up a bunch of our sloppy seconds, and still manage to finish better... All because of a coaching change. It's amazing what a difference it can make.
This is the most important off-season Dubas will probably ever have in his career. So many contracts needs to be signed and decisions to be made at a crucial time in this franchise's current cup window and future. I hope he takes the bold approach and just cleans house on the coaching staff. Another "nExT yEaR" isn't going to change anything.

What Babcock did today was inexcusable: either fire him this offseason or give him just one more year to figure this team and his system out. Much has been said already of how he has used our star players -- you simply do not play 3rd-4th line players when down with 4 minutes left in a game 7.
That being said, I only blame Babcock partly for this series... a large portion of the blame should be shouldered by Kadri. The biggest asset our team had was centre depth; this was supposed to set us apart from our team last year, and was meant to give us a huge matchup advantage against Boston. Kadri took that away from us; in losing him we lost one of our best physical and shutdown players, and lost much the flexibility which made this lineup special.
The Leafs really took it to them this series - there is no way any of us can leave this season thinking that we didn't play a decent 7 games on the whole... even if it was not enough to beat a team like Boston. Change the system, fix the defence, fix the mentality of this team, and let's all give it one more year. This is only our second year of being a "contender"; if we get more of the same next year, only then can we start seriously considering some of the hot takes on this sub.

I know we’re mad but there were a lot of silver linings in this series:
We saw the emergence of Zaitsev as a good, serviceable defenseman.
Moore is going to be a valuable piece moving forward.
Our problems are PK/PP and player-usage which are easier to fix than personnel problems.
We have a lot of prospects in the pipeline who appear ready for next year.

What Babcock did today was inexcusable: either fire him this offseason or give him just one more year to figure this team and his system out. Much has been said already of how he has used our star players -- you simply do not play 3rd-4th line players when down with 4 minutes left in a game 7.
That being said, I only blame Babcock partly for this series... a large portion of the blame should be shouldered by Kadri. The biggest asset our team had was centre depth; this was supposed to set us apart from our team last year, and was meant to give us a huge matchup advantage against Boston. Kadri took that away from us; in losing him we lost one of our best physical and shutdown players, and lost much the flexibility which made this lineup special.
The Leafs really took it to them this series - there is no way any of us can leave this season thinking that we didn't play a decent 7 games on the whole... even if it was not enough to beat a team like Boston. Change the system, fix the defence, fix the mentality of this team, and let's all give it one more year. This is only our second year of being a "contender"; if we get more of the same next year, only then can we start seriously considering some of the hot takes on this sub.

This was not a great year. Last year I would say: fine, we played a very good Bruins team, took it to 7, lost due to some individual mistakes. This year, this was fucking unacceptable.
I was never a Babcock hater, but these playoffs are on him. Can't he fucking see that Marleau, Brown, Gauthier are not exactly an offensive threat, I would even say that they were fucking awful most of the time. Hell, Ron fucking Hainsey was more useful in the Bruins zone than them.
I will say it once again, 1st round exit with this roster is unacceptable, of course Babcock won't be fired but he learned absolutely fucking nothing from last year and with this kind of coaching fucking Crosby on top of Tavares and Matthews wouldn't change shit because he would still play Gauthier and some other offensive 'juggernauts' in crucial moments of games like the one today.

The old and irrelevant hockey crowd has been bitching about nylander and gardiner from day one but you'll be downvoted into oblivion while some dude (who played houseleague only because "they only wanted meathead dump and chasers back then") smashes sets of numbers that have no real verified statistical behind them
People who have played high level hockey know what the saying "playoff hockey is chippy" means. It doesn't mean it's dirty or physical hockey. It means every goal is chipped in after two rebounds and smack off a someones face. Every turn over is the result of 3 people colliding and 2 other people attempting to whack the puck into another. Playoff hockey is like a constant blur and everyone is playing at their hardest for the first time all season.
Speed and aggression are what win playoff games. 83 games of full contact. That's absolutely insane compared to any other sport in the world. Football/rugby/AAF don't even come close to the amount of games. Basketball/Baseball/Soccer have nowhere near the amount of physicality. No player can play at his 100% for even half the regular season- the high skill players can keep their skill high with little effort though.

I'm devastated. No words can even describe how this feels. Imagine losing to the same damn team after gaining Tavares and Muzzin. After going up 3-2 in the series. After watching our powerplay just flounder despite being stacked with players like Marner, Tavares, Matthews, and Rielly. After watching our PK get roasted while complaining about the reffing... only to see that we didn't even get a penalty this game. What we all saw was truly pathetic. There are no excuses and something is clearly wrong with the DNA of this team. I feel sorry for Dubas this summer because I don't even know where to start. Obviously, firing the coaching staff is the first thing that comes to mind, but what do you do after? The final 15 minutes was just straight up sad - it looked like the Leafs just gave up and rolled over. If it was the other way around where it's 3-1 for the Leafs, I'm sure we would have been biting our nails in anxiety as the Bruins pressure us in our own zone. But nope - when the Leafs are down in Game 7, they just roll over and that's all we have to live with until October. F.

Nylander had a rough series but in his defense he had to center the some guy claiming to be Patrick Marleau and Connor Brown. I think a lot of people need to tone back the Nylander hate, he's had a down swing shooting % wise this year. He shot a 5.8 when through his pro career he's been a 9.8. Numbers say he'll be better next year. Remember Babcocks first season in charge where Kadri could not buy a goal? Naz shot a 6.5% that year. Nylander just had a snake bitten year.
Speaking of Kadri, I think he's done a Leaf. The untimely suspensions are really a breaking point. Let Nylander take his 3rd C spot next year and move him on for some prospect, Cap space or help on the back end.
Tavares may not of put up points but he played solid against the Bruins, he was always in the right spot and making smart plays, just bounces didn't go his way.
Marner, see Tavares, also wouldn't surprise me if Mitch got hurt in game 2 or 3.
