Nooooooo you can't support a foreign team

Nooooooo you can't support a foreign team
WTF you're not even from that city!!!!!!!!!
Why?
B because fuck you, that's why!

the real question is why would you support a foreign team

If you don't live within walking distance of the stadium you're not a real fan.

>not illegally squatting in the stadium

I support Chelsea, Man City and United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, PSG, Juventus, Real Madrid, Athletico and Barcelona and its great. You usually end up being the champion each year. Thoroughly recommend it.

Because you have the a-league and no one cares about it

You don't support Shanghai or Guangzhou?

Evergrande, Shenhua, Dongya 4 4 4 4 life

Because I'm a man of taste, watch all the league's and have a preferred club in each except the Portuguese one

>Not being a lifelong Belenenses fan

What's your favourite veikkausliiga team?

>tf
>tp

literally me

of course i support my local team

based

Because you hate your own country and don't want to help your local league grow.

Fc Honka

Attached: downlogad (1).jpg (225x225, 12K)

It's not that you "can't", it's that you don't. If you're not physically at a game then you're just a TV viewer, not a supporter (and that's absolutely fine).

I see you're a man of taste.

But I have to say I literally did grow up within walking distance of FC Honka's stadium so
>true fans only

That’s pretty much impossible in Australia.
AFL, NRL and Cricket are just so much more popular and our league is already failing. Even a lot of wogs prefer NRL.

There's nothing wrong with it
Not everyone is into football fandom, most people just watch it like they would any other TV show

This. Being a casual is fine, it's LARPing as a supporter online that's cringey.

I lived in Australia for a bit and followed Wollongong Wolves in the NSW Prem, super comfy. Are they still on the go?

Teams you're allowed to support:
>Teams from your Home town. Multiple teams is allowed as long as there's a few divisions separating them
>Team your Dad supports as long as it's from his home town
>Teams you managed on Championship/Football Manager provided they weren't casual easy mode teams

I support 3 teams. The local one i grew up playing at, the elite team in my city and Liverpool because both my parents were massive fans and i was forced to watch games when i was young.

Pretty stereotypical for a norwegian i guess.

If that is true i have to add derby and afc telford to my list of teams. Telford is a great fm club, the youth facilities are amazing so you can get 4-6 players from the academy by the time your up in the championship.

What do you have against Bayern?

>le my father supported this team so I must too
Can't get more NPC than this

>Teams you managed on Championship/Football Manager provided they weren't casual easy mode teams
I am very glad you included this wrinkle as I wouldn't be able to continue life without my Ebbsfleet shirt.

you should only support your club, but you can "root" for foreign clubs only to prevent some other foreign clubs to win things

There's a difference between watching a sport and being a fan of a foreign team.

I watch a shit ton of NHL but I'm not a "fan" of any team because my local team plays just two kilometers from here.

That's how I ended up being an NK Domzale casual

Based Norwegian derby customer

I don't care what other people think. I'm not gonna support the sh*tshow that is mlels. There's a reason why all of our talent comes from Germany and that's because our league is Central America tier just with money.
I support the club that I like and that's all I care about.

What's wrong with preferring to watch a certain team

My local divegrass team is a joke and the entire MLS is a giant cash grab but I still won't align with any team in Europe so I get you

It's quite simple really

If you don't support your local team then you have no backbone

And also you touch kids

Why does supporting a foreign club trigger so many euros? Here nobody cares if you're from Europe and support an NFL team or NBA team.

Lol no

This but unironicly

>My dads team is Sunderland

Oh god no, please dont make me follow this rule. I want to support Liverpool like i've done for as long as I can remember.

Attached: 1541529035487.jpg (550x636, 135K)

Sure there are teams I prefer due to their roster or playstyle. I think "fandom" is different, that's when you root for a certain team despite their ups and downs because of a connection you have with that team. I don't have any connection to corporate entities halfway across the world. My own team plays right next to where I live so I can go attend their games with ease and that's why I'm their fan no matter how they're currently doing.

>americans have no concept of culture or history so why isn't the entire world like the us

Pathetic

nobody liks glory hunters, foreigners rarely chose to vote for losers, the rule here is that you should support the club of your city, you have to endure the pain of living in a city with a shit team or you're an opportunistic prick

Fuck off, nerd

>to vote
to root, derp

>t. only plays as Barca

Guessing you live near Sunderland then?

t. Stefanitsipas Potsopoupulianos

My dad supported Polonia :(

I've yet to see a bad post from a Finn.

Nonce

>hurr durr americans have no culture
The NFL alone is full of legendary games like the Ice Bowl and the Miracle at the Meadowlands.
The MLB is older than the majority of Euro soccer leagues.
It's not an argument of history or culture.

Here clubs aren't franchises owned by a single governing body, they are started up by fans and built up. As a result they are deeply rooted in their local communities, even the ones that have foreign investers.

american sports culture is very different. you have things like franchise relocations and consider them to be perfectly normal. sports is seen much more as a branch of the entertainment industry and you don't expect anything more out of it. europeans see sports differently with a bigger emphasis on the interaction with the teams and the local community and that's why the team you root for is a big part of the local identity. it's not just something to watch on tv while ice road truckers isn't on.

one example is how in many european cities with multiple teams the fans are divided by social status or by the language they speak. there's really nothing like this in US sports. you don't have the new york team for the working class and the new york team for the bourgeois. or a los angeles team for the english speakers and a los angeles team for the spanish speakers. people root for whatever team is broadcast on local tv or was broadcast on local tv when they were kids and the whole thing is orchestrated carefully from a league-wide plan to maximize profit rather than europe where teams just kinda popped up organically. it's not like the NHL where the league imports canadians to play in the middle of the desert in +40c weather because that region doesn't have its quota of local sports entertainment filled.

I support WINNIE THE POOH

Good post.

Good post, death to yank sports media economy

Nah, let Americans do their own thing. For them, sport is just a TV channel.

>normal franchise relocation
lol no, did you see what people did when the Chargers decided to relocated? People got pissed off and said to hell with the team. Just look at the team now, it has no support and can't even fill a soccer stadium.
>not local identity
america is so big that it's regional not local. There's the whole raider nation thing going on in the west coast where non-whites and working class people tend to support the raiders because they were one of the first teams to give nonwhite players and staff more opportunities and deliver super bowls.

How was life growing up in E/sp/oo?

>like player x from team y
>no affiliation to team y
>watch team y anyway
>start to love watching team y
>always watch team y
>post about team y on sp
>FUCK OFF NERD THEY AREN'T EVEN YOUR HOMETOWN TEAM

Attached: 1527982971024.png (744x687, 44K)

>feeling so attached to one man you end up basing your entire life as a fan around it
Bit gay, mate.

I mostly follow the NHL and relocating teams is seen as business as usual there apparently. dallas stars, new jersey devils, calgary flames, colorado avalanche, arizone coyotes, carolina hurricans, winnipeg jets. all relocated franchises doing just fine with a strong fanbase (except maybe the yotes but that's not because they're relocated, it's because it's the fucking desert). people don't think of them as relocated teams unless they really know NHL history. they're just the local teams to them.
only thing I hate is when it seeps here. the ifk-jokerit rivalry was probably the best in finland until ruined by money hungry foreign investors moving jokerit to the russian league (a move that luckily failed miserably).

to understand the rivalry you have to understand finland but I'll try to keep it brief. in finland there's always been a division between the finnish-speakers and the swedish-speakers. among the coast they coexist peacefully but the further inland you go the less swedish speakers there are and the more they're seen as "those fancy southeners exploiting us hard working finns". similiar clash exists with helsinki vs. rest of finland.

IFK is traditionally a swedish-speaking team. the name of the team is in swedish. it's also the oldest club in finland. rest of finland had their own local teams but EVERYBODY hated ifk for what it represented. it was much more than just sports. sports just manifested the real societal clash in everyday life.

the thing is 50% of people who live in helsinki aren't from helsinki which is pretty typical for capitals. but all these immigrants simply didn't want to root for IFK because it stood for everything they didn't identify with. so in the 70s they formed a new team, jokerit. a team for people who had moved to helsinki and wanted to go to hockey games. they did lots of work in the outer parts of the city, the poorer neighbourhoods and the working class suburbs and created a solid following.

Here is totally normal to support big team player from your national team signed for. I also know a guy who has supported each team Zlatan has been playing for just because his parents comes from place he was born

but that's what made the rivalry so fucking good. it wasn't just a rivalry because NBC advertised it as "wednesday night rivalry". it was real. it was helsinki natives vs. non-natives. it was inner city vs. outer city. it was swedish-speakers (and finnish-speakers from the coast for whom coexisting in a bilangual environment was totally natural) vs. strictly finnish-speakers. it wasn't just a matter of a color of jerseys or hating a team for being popular. it represented so many unspoken and spoken clashes in the society that rooting for the teams was much more than just watching grown men skate after a puck.

similiar stories are all over europe, and that's why people take sports rivalries seriously. it's more than just sports. like the federalists supporting madrid and anti-federalists supporting barca. nothing like this exists in US. imagine if rangers was the team for the republicans and islanders was the team for democrats. it doesn't exist, because sports are a carefully orchestrated entertainment that doesn't want to clash too seriously with any real issues. it's just a tv show. and the rivalries feel about as real as WWE because there's really nothing behind them except "we wear blue jerseys and they wear orange jerseys and we traditionally don't like orange jerseys".

>Playing FM after 2012

that's unironically what cristiano ronaldo fans do

I live nowhere near and i've never been.

>any of those
>winning anything

Why not support your hometown team, rather than Sunderland or random bandwagoned big club?

From what I see that in Europe the game is more similar to the attitude europeans have towards identity. In europe you're german if you're an ethnic german, but not if you're an ethnic turk that grew up in germany. So it would explain the hostility from local fans because you have to have blood and soil in the club to be a part of it and no matter how much you watch the club or support it you will never be a true fan because you have no roots in it.

While in America we don't really care about race and more about character. Where an ethnic german, irish, or a mixed raced person can all be americans as long as they work and live by what it means to be american. So you can support whatever club you want as long as you put work and dedication into supporting your club and show love for the game.

I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan, but I also support Man City. Arsenal haven't been in a race for the title since Man City's existence about 10 years ago. In that time, City have managed to block multiple enemies from winning a title. For that, I'm a fan. They are truly neutral as they have no fans to brag against me. Even the bandwagoners committed themselves years ago in the huge Premier League commercial expansion, so now only 13 year olds love City, and they can't celebrate over me for winning a title, I can just brag back to them that I've had sex. I might buy a City shirt and wear it in secret when Man Utd or Chelsea play.

that's a big part of it. the reality that most americans were only recently uprooted from their ancestral homes and the culture developed around it that strongly emphasizes the unique nature of the country and defining yourself through your own actions, individualism etc.

I think the backslash against supporting foreign clubs is just like with any bandwagoning. the concept of switching clubs is foreign to most europeans. you root for the same team all your life, your father rooted for that team, his father rooted for that team back when the team was made from workers of the local factory etc. and maybe there were 50 bad years but you stuck with it and now finally they won the championship. and then some chinese guy who has no history or connection to that club tries to act like it's just as a big deal to him because that team had good stats in the newest fifa game.

supporting foreign clubs because of single favourite player transfers from your club is allowed

No, it isn't.

do americans ever not think about race?

you must be a gloryhunting big club wanker

there's no way you can know how much it means for a shit club like celtic to have a alumni like van dick and wanayama win a CL medal

>this is the level of desperation celtic fans have reached

Of course you can, my dear customer friend

I support my local club, who coincidentally just took your manager. Be sure to support us, faggot.

lol no kys

league of Ireland is fairly dogshit, I still support St Pats and go to a couple games for the craic but the quality is bad.
Also it runs during the summer so it doesn't clash with the EPL so its not like my support of Liverpool clashes with it

Usually I support loosers as liverpoop, arsenal, spartak moscow before their 1st place at rpl, english teams in cl, bayern and real madrid in cl before their winnings. And others like atletico and juve in cl.
Also I support teams that are playing against bald fraud and farca.
Also I like blue color.
With no this supporting loosers I like real madrid, cska and probably chelsea and inter milan. And don't like barcelona. And I laugh at spartak moscow and their fans.

Jesus just drop the fucking "city FC" already. It literally sounds retarded and awkward and there is no "Detroit City" in the first place.

>no, no this is the Detroit City team
>not the Detroit state team or the Detroit (disambiguation) team

Because the UAE league is either dominated by old SA players or Al Ain.

Have you ever watched the UAE League?

>Teams you managed on Championship/Football Manager provided they weren't casual easy mode teams
for me, it's doncaster

Carlisle United for me lads

I support 3 teams, my local team which is Portimonense, one of the big three in Portugal (Benfica) and one of the Big European Clubs (Juventus)

maaaaan fuck soccer

Fucking based If ur refering to the real team which is in the lower leagues, If ur talking about ''''belenenses'''' sad then its cringe and yikespilled

>watchig a sport that your country / state doesnt even play
Why?

>Because I'm a man of taste, watch all the...
Being a man of taste implies discriminating between what's worthwhile and what sucks.

This is ONLY acceptable if you're from a random non-footballing country like Indonesia or something and the player is treated as a national icon.

Benfica are a big European club though bro.

more like kys

disgusting
also
>Honka's stadium
lmao

Is there any rivalry between Honka and Espoo?

I support my local team and Real Madrid, because my dad suppports them and I grew up doing the same. As lame as it sounds, supporting either Real or Barça (or another La Liga team) is a cultural thing here, and by that I mean that there is a certain political subtext in regards to which of the two teams you support. Barça supporters are generally left-wing and most people from the lower class support it, while Real supporters often identify with more right-wing politics and, at least in the past, it was a team associated with the middle class and the uper class. The communist movement at my uni, for example, outspokenly and publicly supports Barcelona. Restaurants and bar get filled to the brim for El clásico.

Of course, it doesn't have the same "Spain v. Catalonia" undertones here as it does in Spain, but it still has certain political and cultural undertones.

Interesting insight, thank you.

You can but it's different. If you support a team for a decade no matter it's location and yours, you will be emotionally invested. I started watching burgerball years ago and I went nuts when the Eagles won the owl. But you can't compare it to your hometown. You're in that atmosphere from birth, the name of the city is there for everyone to see making you proud, family and friends all root for your team to. It's a deep bonding experience that brings everyone together.

Obviously if you have no home team that players NFL/NBA/CL/Whatever you might pick a team far away. Honestly even moving to a city and becoming a supporter of the local team is not the same.

>getting to know the turnstile operators by name
>cheering on the local lads you've seen develop since their teens
>turning in celebration to the bloke standing next to you as your team scores and injury time goal
>walking home after a match with your ears ringing and feeling like you're floating

Immense feels.

Honka is Espoo. If they had a rival it'd probably be HJK but HJK's rivalry is with IFK so Honka is just kinda the 3rd wheel no one really cares about.

unless you meant FC Espoo in which case no, because one is top flight and the other 4th flight and amateur.

Does your team ever get anywhere in the Asian Champions League?

If you travel to that club at least 10 times a season then yeah, you're a supporter.

i support my local teams when they play in international cups

They don't even qualify, Indonesian football is that grim

Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, lived near Lokomotiv stadium, never really was a true supporter as my family wasn't into football and the sport itself was secondary to picking team-related brawls for my peers.

Now I'm in Paris, and, uh, PSG is not exactly a "local team".

caralho pq o futebol ta tão lixo, meu Yea Forums?

it's the easy mode real men support their local team

Having watched both, I can safely say that the Indonesian league and the Brazilian league aren't even comparable.
I unironically enjoy watching my local 3rd division team far more than the couple of games of Indonesian football that I saw.

idk, it just feels so weird
teams that should be dominant just can't prove their dominance, for an example, palmeiras spent like 50 million on players and couldn't score once against a half sub-18 team.

it feels like bad players are too overrated, and there's no good, skilled players anymore. it's just physical, i think the last player that had a glimpse of skill was neymar (and ganso, when his knee wasn't fucked. sad, he was more promising than neymar).

>tfw you support Middlesbrough

This only works if your main team doesn’t have political/cultural/religious links with the foreign team you support. Good examples would be the Old Firm’s affinities with their respective Hamburg clubs

Support your local team first and foremost faggots

I love supporting my local team the Emirates Club but they rarely win anything.

We aren't that bad but every season we get robbed by refs cocksucking Dubai and Abu Dhabi teams making almost impossible for teams outside of the big four cities to win.
