you have feeder domestic competitions for the national team in most countries which nobody watches, it's just whos playing for four days. usually you just follow the results online or on the radio
then in the last decade they've created leagues playing a shorter format of the game (3 hours) which is easier to market and is wildly popular

Let's face it, cricket isn't exactly an easy sport to pick up if you're not brought up in it. Not getting at least the basics in PE lessons won't help.

Of course I'd also point to the general demise of the workplace sports/social club, and that playing fields now seem a lot emptier at weekends than when I was a lad, but the lack of just coming across it on BBC2 while bored in the summer hols isn't helping it either.

I remember when Ireland beat England in cricket, the entire country went cricket mad for two weeks. Kids were playing it in public parks and loads of clubs swelled with new members.
