He's not as good of a focal point as Kane against deep defenses (inferior striking ability from distance, hold up play, aerial ability, vision when dropping back in between the lines, strength, length) when England play with one striker, and they rarely played with two out and out forwards after Hodgson.

Even when Southgate played 5-3-2 the second striker was more of a 10/winger who could move around to get good 1 v 1 match ups and create off the dribble (Sterling/Rashford).

He's a good forward and not useless against deep defenses, but he is one-dimensional enough it discourages certain means of progressing the ball (see the Newcastle game) and makes the attacking team predictable.
