depends on the category, in openwheel racing its usually illegal wrecking another driver, other tipes of contact (like pushing off the track) can be debatable, on sports and touring cars contact is more common, since theres less risk of locking wheels and end up with one car flying, and on stock cars like nascar there's the "rubbing is racing", but it can be punished in a few occasions (see the whole logano vs kenseth saga)

assuming you're not asking about f1, over at indy rossi, power, dixon, newgarden are some of the current top dogs, in nascar kyle busch, logano, keselowski are currently dominant, in motogp marquez is unquestionably the current goat, theres a ton of other categories, just watch a couple of races and you'll end up choosing your guys

I always loved motorsport as a kid but completely abandoned it as an adult. I'm a turbopleb so F1 occasionally gets my interest but I have literally no idea what else to watch. Do I just start taking an interest in road cars or watch certain events or what?

The best way to start is simply by watching a few races. If the interest is there then the desire to continue watching should appear, atleast that's partially how it was for me.
