Because it became a popular element of "prep" culture at places like Ivy league colleges. It's really not a rich persons sport anymore, and it's one of the fastest growing in America. If you want real rich people sports, you look to shit that requires R&D like racing. You think it's hard to buy a 200$ stick and some pads to last your 3-4 years? Try having to amass hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund a single season of any sort of serous race car driving. If you're not born to millionaire parents or have god tier talent, you're fucked.
