The problem was we had no absolute top-tier players in a lot of areas - goalkeepers, left-midfield (just stuck centre-mids there and hoped for the best), right-back (after neville retired, at least) - and we had minimal depth in a lot of the other areas - e.g. Rooney and Owen were good strikers, but when they got injured we were forced into shoving players like Darius Vassell in there instead. That and the formation didn't work for the team and the lack of squad cohesion.
