Mustafi is an all or nothing defender. Virtually every single intervention he has is poised on a knife-edge. Sometimes fortune goes his way and he has an excellent game. Sometimes it doesn't and he looks abject. He's constantly gambling as a defender. That sort of attitude is fine in a winger because the cost is so low when it doesn't come off relative to the benefit when it does. But in a centre-back? It's unsustainable. You pay too heavy a cost when the gamble doesn't work out. It's why a lot of fans are fed up with him.
