There was no year 0. The Anno Domini system was created by the Romans, who didn't have the concept of zero, just tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. They started counting at 1.

No, they went from 1 BC to AD 1. The first century was years 1-100, not 0-99. The second century was 101-200, not 100-199. So the 21st century started on January 1, 2001.

I always wondered if the zero point is a second or a whole year but it feels like a stupid question to ask so I never did.

As long as you get it, that's ok. Sometimes the simplest facts are disturbing even if explainable. The Romans just hadn't learned the mathematical concept of zero from the Arabs yet, and our lingering punishment for adopting this system of counting the years is annoyance thanks to the smoothness of our simple monkey brains.
