At this point, I have to say Texas Tech is the favorite. They have been completely destroying opponents, not only in the tournament, but also went 9-0 down the stretch in their conference with most of those games being blow outs.

The only thing obscuring the fact that they are a dominant team was their pedestrian performance in the first half of the season and then dropping a game to West Virginia in the B12 tournament that ultimately didn’t matter.

Why is Shaka Smart such a good recruiter but shitty coach? I mean I guess you could say the same about Calipari but at least Calipari takes his team to the tournament. Shaka Smart has been getting top-10 recruiting classes for the last few years with some of the best one and dones in the country but can't even manage a single tournament win, let alone making it this year.

Not to mention Beilein and Matt Painter (x2) as well.

Beard has only ever really lost to Jay Wright as far as major h2h with great coaches go in the tournament, and Nova last year clearly outclassed everyone, but Tech still made it more of a game than any of Nova’s other opponents did.

TTU alum here from mid 2000's (when we had bobby knight and michael crabtree, best time ever for TTU athletics).

Beard, as fuckign awesome as he's been, is objectively not as good as Izzo. On paper, Izzo is easily top 5, along with K, Roy Williams, and Boeheim (maybe Calipari, but idk).

I will say however, that objectively I think TTU will win it all. Someone earlier posted about how they have been VASTLY outplaying everyone in every game except the WVU big 12 tourney game since like January. 20 pt victories in every game except Zag last night.

They can play Virginia's slow down game just as good, but they actually have better shooters. Moretti has a higher % than Guy from 3 and from the FT line (#1 in the nation at the FT line actually), and Mooney and Culver also both shoot over 33% from long. Francis also will hit the open shot, and hell even Owens can.

TTU's only weakness is depth. Their 8th guy plays like 5 min a game. If Culver or Owens get in foul trouble, it's ogre. I suspect Izzo knows this and will try to exploit this, we'll have to see how Beard adjusts.

One thing I was worried about with GONZ was Few taking advantage of our switch D, which he did very well at early in the game. Hachimura got like 10 pts on Mooney or Moretti (6 ft guards) when they switched off on him. Beard was able to fix this in the 2nd half, and made sure Owens or ODiase was on him down low, which was the difference in the game.

I suspect Izzo will try to get mooney and Culver in foul trouble early.

I’m not debating resumes. If we just look at accomplishments right now, yes, Izzo is undeniably better than Beard, but I’m saying I think Beard WILL ultimately prove himself to be a better coach than Izzo.

There is only one guy in the game that I think I would say I’d rather have than Beard right NOW with the expectation of success in the future, and that’s Jay Wright. Nobody else.
