Marchionne specifically wanted Leclerc in Ferrari for this season and insisted on his plan being implemented even after his death. When it was initially announced, most perceived it to be something against Gimi, that Marchionne simply wanted Gimi gone from the team. However, I think it had fuck all to do with him or his results. Sure he is way past his prime but he performed the supporting driver role with zero drama and was essentially the perfect driver for that role, to support Vettel.
Marchionne's plan wasn't a criticism of Kimi, it was a criticism of Vettel. He wanted Charles in the team because he wants a driver in the car who can actually win a championship with the car provided. The fact is that Vettel choked TWO consecutive years where he was provided a top tier car and I don't think this went unnoticed by the people who matter. I don't think there is a bigger sin as a Ferrari driver than wasting the potential of a great car, and Vettel did that two years in a row. Sure we are only 2 races into this season, but this plan is already showing to be the right one. Leclerc is on pace almost immediately and this weekend he was simply just the better driver of the two. It actually demonstrated it perfectly; Leclerc was cruising comfortably in the lead and Vettel ended up choking under pressure and destroyed his own race, when he had such a car that he shouldn't have even been fighting with Hamilton in the first place.
Leclerc is Ferrari's future, and there is nothing Vettel can do about it. He will either succumb to a supporting role (unlikely to go down well, or at all), change teams and go back to Red Bull or something or just retire after his contract is over and go down in history as the greatest carbabby that ever raced in F1. Seek in your heart and you know this to be true.
