>'The Heysel ban wasn't really about football, it was an attack on working-class culture'

>One of the things that Peter Reid and Neville Southall got right [in the book] is they said that ‘the Heysel ban wasn’t really about football, it was an attack on working-class culture’. Football was the greatest expression of working-class culture in Britain at the time. Thatcherism was conducting an all-round assault on it — the miners, Liverpool in particular was the thorniest problem for Thatcher. It was the only city that refused to back down and continued to fight.

>It’s unimaginable to think, but they actively discussed and managed the decline of the city in cabinet. They actually were withdrawing resources from the city, forcing people to move away. It’s mind-boggling to think of it, that they treat a whole section of society that way, and demonise and criminalise them while this was going on.

>At a time when we were politically, economically and socially under pressure, the thing we had as flag-bearers were the football teams, who were the best in Europe.

Thatcher hated Liverpool so much she got them banned from Europe. Really makes you think, huh?

Conspiracy theories with 20/20 hindsight following a bias you want to be true.

As someone who grew up in Liverpool in the late 80s, early 90s I can tell you that "managed decline" was real. The goverment tried to cut the city off completely and let it rot ala Detroit. If it weren't for the militant left council takeover from Hatton etc, Liverpool would have been truly fucked.

Made up Maggies in the mud now though the horrible slag.

tl;dr scouser propaganda, saged

yes I supposed thatcher made them murder 39 italians as well

It is a well known fact that the trouble makers at Heysel were National Front Chelsea supporters. Probably sent by Thatcher herself.

People forget that Juve fans charged Liverpool first, Liverpool stood their ground then charged back and the Juve fans ran away and pushed the wall on their own.

Not our fault Italians are pussy faggots m8

As a burger, can you explain the reasoning? What did she do?

Pls no bully it's an honest question.

>People forget that Juve fans charged Liverpool first

they didn't though, it's scouse lies.

too bad she didn't finished the job #96wne

Have a read of the article.

Thatcher essentially closed down all local industry and allowed for privitisation of most companies (in turn costing many jobs). She closed the mines across the north and the docks in Liverpool. All the money was kept in the south, specifically London. The reason? I guess theres always been a north/south divide and the generally "left" leaning political north would often be looked down upon by the richer, conservative south. The "managed decline" report came out years later showing that they'd considered not sending any money to the local council in turn forcing people to leave the city and move elsewhere for work.

As for Liverpool, the people there wouldn't stand for it and there was a council takeover by hard left socialists in an election which decided to spend all their yearly budget in a few months, forcing the hand of the government to send more money.

Yeah, you was there. I forgot. My bad. Sorry mate.

I went to the library today to pick up a book I ordered on the history of The Hillsbrough Disaster, when I asked the Librarian she said she didn't have any record of it. I demanded to know why and she said "It's not our fault", "Yes, that's the one I ordered" I replied.

Why didn't the private sector take over those industries?

bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-29953611

They did and they closed them down.

>reee stop infringing on my right to commit mass murder you elites

so they weren't running a profit then?

The coal mines hadn’t been profitable since 1918 for fucks sakes. They simply were not competitive with Ruhr mines, and oil made coal obsolete well before the 70’s. Endlessly striking, endless Union bitching, endlessly being subsidised and holding the economy to ransom. The mines should’ve been closed decades before they were put out their misery.

Don't believe Scouse lies. What happened is that Thatcher realised that the UK was no longer able to compete in the industry that they had been kings of prior to WW2; manufacturing. USA had taken the baton and was screaming ahead. To make things worse, China and India were also stepping up to the plate. Realising that shit like coal and steel was never going to work she funded the development of the UK banking sector to remain relevant. London became and remained the Financial Capital of the World until New York replaced it. She also never expected to lose Hong Kong because she didn't expect China to threaten to genocide the entire island. So she cut off the leg to save the body. The Norfers don't realise this and think that she somehow purposefully fucked them over when they'd be even poorer if she hadn't done it. Their benefits and services they take a huge amount of are paid because London manages to be relevant.

Maybe not in the short term. The disastrous monetarist policies of Thatcher's early years permanently killed off huge chunks of British industry. The problem with free-market dogma is that what is profitable right now is not necessarily the best thing in the long run.

Many of the coal mines closed by Thatcher and her successors were profitable. It was a politically motivated attack on union power. Also having a coal industry rather than burning all your oil and gas for electricity is obviously a good thing regardless of profitability.

Retarded neoliberal garbage. Basing our economy on financial bubbles has clearly worked out very badly.

>think that she somehow purposefully fucked them over
She very clearly did. She had seen how the unions had brought the previous Tory government down and she was determined to make sure that could never happen again. Read a book.

They were being closed down for decades before Thatcher came to power, she just finished the job.
