What is a DNS block?

DNS = Domain Name System. The way you're able to access a website through a convenient, memorable name or phrase like "4channel.org" or "google.com" is because those phrases are translated into IP addresses by DNS. So a DNS block (as I'm using the phrase) means where a domain name is completely removed from a DNS server or set of DNS servers, rendering the website effectively unreachable (unless you independently know their IP address, and even then part of the website might be be broken).

Most people use DNS servers provided by their ISP (this is because most configurations just use the ISP's DNS servers as assigned when they lease an IP address). Thus, in response to public pressure, aussie and kiwi ISPs had the entries for Yea Forums/4channel and a number of other websites removed from the DNS servers they operate.

The problem with these is that they're trivial to circumvent. You just need to go into the settings on your computer or device and add a different DNS server, and there are loads of them you can use.

Eh they might be able to cause more problems by dropping DNS requests at their network's border or just blocking the port. ISPs used to do this with outgoing SMTP to stop compromised systems (or other bad actors) from sending spam e-mails.

It should work, but I'm thinking about some unusual use cases (bad or complex web design) where the website uses non-relative links a lot (i.e., links to 4channel.org/whatever instead of /whatever) or links to an external CDN that is also blocked (apparently not the case here; supposedly 4channel is blocked but not 4cdn).

Honestly even if you couldn't get a third-party DNS working, you could always just drop it in your local hosts file.
