Messi and Ronaldo actually have abysmal freekick conversion rates at 8.4, and 4.1% respectively (Transfermarkt).

QT is, stats wise, Barca's best Freekick taker, and one of the best in Europe at 22.3% conversion (all with Liverpool though).

I think it's because they tend to shoot a lot more. QT and other high conversion folk don't go for direct freekicks unless it's a really good position and instead opt to cross more. Messi and Ronnie almost always shoot.
