3:30 may seem slow but realize that even the fastest road-legal hypercar is still worlds apart from current racing prototypes. I think even GTE cars would murder any road legal hypercar. Even the legendary Toyota GT-One did "only" 3:30 around La Sarthe. We're too spoiled by the current LMP1 cars which are basically F1 cars with fenders.

Unfortunately broadcasters still dominate the marketplace, and if indy wants more than 30k people to watch their race any given weekend, its gotta be on TV. Maybe in a decade over the top will be the norm, but for now IndyCar has to play the game. Not to mention the sponsors that actually fund these teams would dry up without broadcast exposure. The problem is, there just arent a lot of fans outside the us where f1 is still king, so they have to take what they can get in regards to TV rights outside the USA.
