I agree with this and not even a Arsenal or Chelsea fan. He had everything you wanted from a lb. Roberto Carlos had more memorable moments with his fancy free kicks, but Cole was the perfect fast, agile and tactically aware lb.

All unnecessary qualities for a defender. Given that hes a wing back he does get use out of it it but his actual skill is also overrated. His saving grace would be his physical conditioning but given his poor tactical judgement its not even used to a good extent by himself.

Why do so many people rate him?

Because no other LB has exerted such influence in a team's offensive play, bar peak Marcelo. none of them will be remembered for they defensive skills and that's perfectly fine.
