It's amazing how Jenson's career progressed. When he first started in F1 I'd guess that a majority of fans didn't like him. He was given the playboy label for making more headlines off the track than on it. Seasons roll by in underperforming cars and after a bitter contract termination he finds himself starting to become a "what-if" guy. Then he blitzes the field in the Brawn and now it's one of the most popular Championship wins in the modern era. That win must've felt so amazing to him!

That's fine, as long as it's an extra point scored rather than a point in its own right. F1 needs to move away from the chance of meme shit like fan boost, DRS was a mistake in its own right (in the fact that it's limited to a certain portion of the track, and only within a second behind etc). A massive mistake of F1 was making DRS like this, rather than allowing moveable aero which would negate the issue of following a car (within the dirty air? moveable front end flaps allowing greater downforce through corners, negating the loss of downforce following a car).
this. you either have fully static aero, or fully automated transformers aero where the car can detect when its on a straight or in a turn and adjust downforce on its own. no in between and definitely no push to pass
>Itry to keep doing my job and if I connect myself properly here [in Super Formula] then I keep the boss happy and then maybe he’ll give me the opportunity to drive his car this year

It would absolutely fix it since the car in front would also be using DRS.

Brody Morales
DRS is stupid because it's push to pass, active only when the car is behind in certain zones and at a certain distance. DRS in its current form would be fine if any car could use it at any time, but obviously that would be pointless as it would negate any benefits.
Active aero has no drawbacks, but comes a long way to fixing the issues of aerodynamic disturbances.
David Butler
yes.
Mason Martin
Fun anecdote: my squad used to paint our faces black in the army with exhaust soot because normal camouflage face paint faded away in a couple of hours whereas exhaust soot from a truck lasted 2-3 days
David Howard
So its just lets make active aero aviable for everyone, not just car behind? Whats the point then? It would make even shittier flows since there would be moving parts involved and you can pretty much wave goodbye to any overtaking.
i said static aero too. and full time auto aero would fix the drs problem as all cars can use it all the time. it would make development more expensive and again allow for more wealthy teams to be more dominant. i would prefer static but both would fix current drs push to pass nonsense
If they insist on DRS this is the way to do it. I'd prefer simple aero myself (90s or Indy style) but if you want to be >much pinnacle of gotta go fast then so be it.
Kevin Russell
biznes idea: reverse drs, monza rear wing everywhere, chasing driver can activate monaco flap in corners
Jaxson Brown
business idea: mandatory 1 trans driver and 1 gay race engineer per team
Have we just witnessed the first good post ever made by this flag?
Dylan White
How so? Moving parts allow for more drastic aerodynamic patterns which would create completely awful air disturbances for the following cars. I honestly don't understand thought process behind this, to me its: >lets remove drs cause fake overtaking is boring >but we need to still somehow let cars overtake >so lets give them more downforce Which is completely counterproductive since more downforce equals to less overtaking because it reduces ammount of optimal lines you can take through the turn which not only makes everyone take same line through the turn but also slows down cars behind since downforce becomes too effective and while leader can take full advantage of it everyone following him will take a massive hit to their performance because they lack what essentially makes those cars fast.
If you really really really want to make F1 more action packed you should decrease downforce ammounts and shove more powerful engines in those cars. You can allow more mechanical grip to combat wheelspin through even wider tires or maybe, just maybe allow for 4wd and see if its gonna be any fun.
For each corner, there's going to be an optimum downforce level (A). When a car is following, they are running at A downforce minus B downforce reduction caused by turbulence (which some people say is as much as 75% of total downforce). If cars are allowed active aero, lets say that the midpoint range of each aero setup is for optimum (A). Therefore, if they are in a turbulent situation they can add more downforce through active aero (C) to counteract. This obviously won't be a perfect situation (B is not the inverse of C) but C>0.
Now of course, on the straights, you would want the opposite of max downforce (D), this would have to exist due to active aero for the corners. So everyone gets this all the time = no push to pass.
The negatives are not reduced overtaking but safety (wing disconnects like we see with current DRS), and expense. F1 however should be expensive - it creates the most interest. Every cost saving step has caused the sport to be neutered - the engine limit means you don't get meme cars like the early 00's Mclaren which was shit hot fast but kept popping its merc engine - oh well, new engine for the next race NP.

I don't get it. Do you want to give an advantage to following cars by granting them more downforce in corners than leader has or not? If yes how is this any different from DRS? You do understand people will use it to achieve different turn lines? And following cars will have a massive run on a leader even before the straight, and that momentum will keep going throughout all the strait and overtakes will be achieved before breaking zone so it effectively is even worse than current DRS.
Gabriel Hill
I had to stay up till 6am doing some work for uni, and I can confirm Red Bull Energy Drink helped me massively to achieve this without dying.
I think the problem you have in understanding this is that you think more downforce = better. There's an optimum downforce level for each corner - if you have too much you'll just be slower because you're limiting your vmax. The big issue with aero disruption is in 1 type of corner - medium speed. Once you have the downforce (as the lead car) to drive around those like a scalextric car any more would be negative for your corner speed. Active aero in these situations would just allow the following car (in dirty air) to increase their downforce to achieve levels closer to that of the car infront.
>advantage to following cars by granting them more downforce in corners than leader has or not
More downforce yes, but not so simply - greater downforce is required to deal with the dirty air, to achieve the same result as the car ahead. Car A has A downforce, Car B wants to have A downforce but has -B (turbulence) and +C (less than +B but still greater than 0) - A-B+C downforce.
Nathan Reyes
>I think the problem you have in understanding this is that you think more downforce = better. It is though, you can load car with less mechanical grip if your downforce is good enough. If you put cars to a point where you can't gain anymore from downforce it would be literally impossible to make aero that negates dirty air making whole concept to be absolutely pointless.

no the current issue is primarily with vortex generators creating the worst of the dirty air. a slong as the active aero is not a vortex generator it would definitely be an improvement over push to pass drs. id be curious to see a real world test and result >less downforce >more power i agree with this, it makes for better racing. active aero is only another suggestion i put out that is better than push to pass. cars going as fast as thye actually can and challenging each other without artificial advantages is always better. why are you sperging so hard, russlander bro?

They literally tried movable front wings two years before DRS and it did nothing. I mean there is extenuating circumstances there but with the current car format it is useless.
Like really specifically one of the issues was it that it came in with the full width front wings, and since said full width front wings covered the tires you ran max wing angle all the time because it also produced the least drag. But actually the whole narrow rear wing/wide front wing combo was pretty effective to start with, it became less effective over the years because they stopped using the outer portion for straight downforce generation and more for dicking with the flow around the tires and used that whole Y250 vortex faggotry so the cars were once again more dependent on clean air to the central part of the nose. Then they wrote the 2014 rules and apparently nobody even knew why the fuck the 2009 rule changes were made so they just made the front wing narrower to balance out the loss of the beam wing and reduce broken wings.
In theory the 2019 rules are supposed to be a reset to the equivalent of 2009 front wings with max width and restrictions on the outer shape complexity, but Alfa's meme wing and similar designs from some other teams have already made a laughing stock out of that.
Reality is that with active aero there would be only a handful of corners on the entire calendar you wouldn't run max downforce from lifting point to apex at least. Even some full throttle corners tire scrub and wider lines can cost you more speed than the drag if you don't have enough grip.
Subjective opinion on aesthetics is dumb. It's all about the performance, what is the point of liking F1 if the look matters more than the lap times? Well, there are those who are in it for the memes anyway, because the racing is inferior to most serie's most of the time.
