Xerxes was a real dude and a Sparta is a real place
Neither of those are mythological

Hanover 96 is actually named after a mythological group of thieving dwarves with funny hair and nasal voices that made a living snowball during an attempt to thieve some goal from a mountain, and were then crushed.

In Netherlands we have Ajax, Achilles, Heracles and Hermes.
Most of these were founded by rich teenagers who knew each other from their education at the gymnasium where they learned about Greek mythology. They chose these club names basically to flaunt their rich heritage and good education.
Wasn't everyone just more aware of the classical tradition back then and not just the rich kids?
ah yes, the 19th century intellectual working class
No were talking about a time where poor kids didn't go to s hool but worked in factories instead
of cuorse it was.
Giuseppe Verdi and Opera was huge in Italy during the 19th century and it was widespread among social classes. Of course greekboos were aristocrats and is referring to this but back in the days what we consider higher culture was more at folk level
Does American folklore count? Because we have the New Jersey Devils (named for pic related from local legend, although our mascot is just a normal Satan-type devil)
The team itself is admittedly bad, but the name and logo are god tier imo.
