The clubs are agreeing to the cap as set out in the NRL framework for the sake of competition, there's no common law remedy for that. They're agreeing to it, I guess if they don't then there's nothing stopping them from leaving the NRL and setting up their own league without a salary cap

The cap is supposed to have other benefits like spreading the wealth around to players at lower levels and different clubs, while keeping the league more competitive and therefore lucrative, increasing player payments in the long run
whether you believe that is irrelevant, the NRL has a solid case for the cap. from that perspective they're not unfairly impacting on the club's ability to trade but theoretically acting in their benefit.
