To be fair, I can see how their image, especially on their early records can be portrayed that way but I agree, that doesn't change the fact that they rocked and they had some real thoughtful contributions to the genre like The Crimson Idol and Headless Children

Yes it has to be fun and not dark and depressing which I hate to say because I prefer the lattter but yeah I get it.

It can be dark, it can't be boring and non dangerous, it just can't have the "protagonist" be the loser. It has to be edgy enough for kids to find dangerous but also strong and uplifting enough for kids to find it something to look up to and want to be a part of

The 90's concept of "it's cool to be a loser" has been dead for a long ass time, kids still want dark and edgy shit but it's no longer empowering to be the wimp like it was for a little while....that's why heavy metal ruled, it was for the outcasts but it didn't reinforce the fact that you fit in with nobody else and that you should feel shitty about it, it told you you shouldn't care what they think and be celebrate being a separate class.

That being said, it's not gonna happen because we know all this shit is calculated and right now absolutely nothing can get popular organically without the mainstream pushing it, and all they are pushing right now is "white people are evil, straight people are evil, black people are good, gay people are good"

I don't think its 'its cool to be a loser' or 'dark and depressing' is the problem, those attitudes work and a great about the grunge era.

its this whole pretension 'our music is so mellow we don't have to put any energy into it' that shit indie rock bands employ. they think they're been groundbreaking and edgy when in reality they're safe and mild.
