No, seriously. More like this? Why the fuck is there no good groove metal?

There's no other good groove metal because it was literally invented as a term for Pantera.
Every other band that comes close always manages to fit into some other category, like groove metal plus nu-metal, or groove metal plus sludge metal, or groove metal plus death metal.
You're basically asking for a copycat Pantera band.

That's exactly what I'm asking for!
There's tons of copycats for all the big names from the past thirty years...why not Pantera?

Because they themselves already are a better version of Exhorder.

This is the best that groove metal got:

I don't listen to Lamb of God but aren't they basically Pantera 2.0?

Try Throwdown. It's closest to pantera that I can find.

Dearly Beheaded's debut
No thanks needed OP

yes

Is this groove metal?
youtube.com/watch?v=7mWPJK1wJnM

Fuck me haven't heard that name in a long long time.

This. Overkill are the only good groove metal band because they already had that "Jersey attitude with a crooked smile" image from Horrorscope at the latest which allowed them to make convincing tough guy posturing music. Also Bobby's vocals are always top tier and full of character as opposed to the insecure frat boy gruntings of Anselmo and his copycats.

This filler track from one of their more obscure albums is better than anything Pantera ever did.

Do you not like this?
>industrial
White Zombie has bits of that but the two big albums from them I think lean more toward a groove metal sound, obviously if crazy solos are what you want they don't have that, but since you're so hung up about the "groove metal" thing I assume you just want groovey riffs

Also, lots of people like Lamb Of God and other "new wave of american metal" that pretty much all was influenced a lot by Pantera, just expect some metalcore or death metal in the mix too with that shit

Glamtera was based, Power Metal is the shit.

You know it's good when Classic Doom imagery comes to mind on my first listen.

Ikr

Also Testament - Low and Fear Factory - Demanufacture are all good shit

Had a bunch of very satisfying wanks to her in the 90's.
Yeah I was lonely.

The Law by Exhorder is better

>ywn pay some guy to get punched for your album cover

Attached: moby-90s.w330.h412jkl;.jpg (681x1000, 262K)

but there are many Pantera wannabe's, most of them end up sucking balls or being glorified metalcore

Exhorder, Lamb of God, Down

this. pantera was pretty unapologically violent and masculine in the 90s. glad they left glam rock

white zombie album la sexorcisto vol. 1 is one of the most based albums ever made

Why do people compare Exhorder to Pantera so much? The only real similarity is that their singer has a very similar voice to Anselmo, the instumentation is completely different.

I used to think about her being my girlfriend, and actually dated a girl who looked slightly similar to her later in high school

Attached: panterawhitezombie.jpg (750x529, 94K)

This was awesome before the vocals kicked in. You’re delusional if you think this is better than anything pantera ever did.

yes, Lamb of God is pretty much the only band I can think of that sounds like Pantera without just being a Pantera tribute band

Infectious Grooves is good. youtube.com/watch?v=1f7XwCsx4fs

>just expect some metalcore or death metal in the mix too with that shit
I wouldn't call Lamb of God metalcore, they don't have the whiny vocals and lyrics I associate with metalcore like KSE, BFMV etc.
They're essentially Pantera-style groove metal pushed in the direction of death metal in terms of vocals and tempo. Unfortunately, the production on their albums from Ashes of the Wake onwards has also detracted somewhat from the raw and stripped down aesthetic of both Pantera and death metal.
And I feel they have less dynamic range than Pantera, who with only a single guitarist could cover a lot more ground from quiet to loud and from slow to fast, without the bottom end falling out.
What Pantera did was ahead of the game. Looking at each member of LoG and their individual skills, they ought to be able to match Pantera in that respect, but as a group they just don't.

...What do you think "instrumentation" means?

Thoughts?

bad. really bad. listening to pre-phil Pantera, Damageplan, Hellyeah etc gives you a feel for what the Abbott brothers were creatively bringing to the table. Similarly with listening to Down, Superjoint Ritual etc for Phil.
And I have to say, Phil was definitely a creative force. without him, the Abbott brothers played generic run-of-the-mill shit.
But as good as I think Phil is, there was definitely synergy. Pantera was greater than the sum of its parts.

Power Trip reminds me a lot of Pantera

Ehh....I dunno if I agree with all of that, because of a couple things, for one personally the only side project Phil had I personally thought was any good was Down which I love almost as much as Pantera, but everything else was sucky to me so I don't really hold it up too far above Damageplan myself. When it comes to pre Phil Pantera, Phil WAS with the band during the "Glamtera" period for the album Power Metal which sounds a lot better than the stuff before but that's only because Phil was a better singer than Terry Glaze and a damn good Rob Halford impersonator, but I don't think that had anything to do with the music getting better, I think Dimebag just started to become a better player around that time. It's not like Phil was secretly writing riffs for Dimebag during the Pantera glory days either, the music is still all Dime with or without Phil.

Damageplan I also didn't care for but I don't think it was do to any lack of talent of the Abbott bros, I think why it was what it was was a calculated and strategic choice they made because of all the shit that was popular at the time....that was when nu-metal was still going fairly strong in terms of popularity and metalcore or whatever you wanna call it type shit like Shadows Fall and those kind of bro-camo pants core bands was starting to get big....and yeah, Damageplan to me sounds extremely "2004" which is exactly what I think they were going for, so it succeeded in that regard even if that's not what most Pantera fans wanted to hear. Hellyeah isn't really fair to compare since it was just Vinnie's project, Dime was never involved.

Yfw Phil runs off to Louisiana and makes the best metal album ever with his drug buddies and old friends

I'm not saying Dimebag was a bad guitarist. He was one of the best, but I'm still convinced Phil was a catalyst for good songwriting.
And not saying Phil wrote riffs for Dimebag either, but with his lyrics and the gritty, moody attitude Phil imbued with his voice (when they moved away from the glam sound), it has to have set a mood that inspired Dime in his instrumentation.

>goes up to people wearing Pantera shirts at Anal Cunt shows and says "You're a fucking wigger!"

Overlooked Nola...damn glad I gave it a listen. Holy shit.

NOLA was great, first listened to it when I was 16 and totally met the mindset I was in at the time. The Down album I inadvertently overlooked for a while was A Bustle in Your Hedgerow. Can't remember when I first picked it up, but from first playthrough I regretted not getting it sooner.

After Nola, I just dl their whole disco. Good stuff.

Huh

>more like this?
uhh... more pantera?

>unapologically violent and masculine
It was all lame posturing, though. Even the Vulgar artwork was staged, nobody actually got punched

Dime
>awful guitar tone
>tried to make it as a glam musician for most of the 80s
>"groove metal" that he was largely responsible for was a huge influence on shit genres like metalcore and nu metal
>Damageplan was objectively garbage
>relied on family connections in the music industry to get ahead

Phil
>a cunt but a bretty good singer that put Pantera on the map
>Down and Superjoint are good
>got ahead on his own
>still alive

What's with the "Phil is a cunt" meme?

>According to Vinnie Paul, the man on the cover was paid $10 a punch and was hit in the face 31 times to get the right picture. However, Brad Guice stated that the man, who was named Sean Cross, was never actually hit.

i can forgive phil for any glam phase, he was like barely 20

he kind of is a cunt, but people who try to get him cancelled (like that toss pot from Machine Head) need to get checked.
Phil isn't actually some evil white nationalist skinhead, he's just a cognitively impaired (former?) junkie who uses all insults - racial or not - like some defiant middle school kid. Anyone who tries to paint him as a bad, genuinely malicious guy is being disingenuous.

Exhorder - Slaughter in the Vatican

> "It was a very rehearsed setup... with the fist moving and pushing the model's face hard to achieve the look, but not at all punched," he said. "I shot the image in color. First, I used strobe (lights) in the foreground to stop the motion, and tungsten spots in the background and hair for the dramatic movement through a drag/time exposure. I had a strong fan to help blow the hair to help with movement. I needed to play with the camera's shutter speed, and my own moving the camera with the so-called punch to get the desired effect of movement and a feeling of reality. I also used a lower camera angle to make for a more powerful dramatic view."
Vin kept repeating the story even though it was thoroughly debunked

This

>Dime
>>awful guitar tone
Let me guess...your idea of "good" guitar tone is 2000s and onward overproduced soulless shit that all sounds the same as the next band?
>>tried to make it as a glam musician for most of the 80s
And? That was the popular look in the 80's, and I don't take anyone's opinion seriously who thinks all commercial or non extreme metal in the 80's sucked glam look or otherwise. If you don't like WASP, I don't trust that you like straight up regular standard "heavy metal" period, that shit was metal as fuck. Not thrash metal, not pop metal, not black metal, just METAL.
>was largely responsible for was a huge influence on shit genres like metalcore and nu metal
So you must also hate Faith No More, RATM, all alternative rock, hardcore punk, and melodic death metal? If you do....fair enough then, but if not you're a hypocrite.

And since you hate glam you must hate Van Halen yes? They were the biggest influence on the glam metal scene just like Pantera was an influence on nu-metal and metalcore. And if you hate Van Halen, your opinion on guitar tones is irrelevant.

You type like a KISS fan. Won't even bother with any replies after this one

>So you must also hate Faith No More, RATM, all alternative rock, hardcore punk, and melodic death metal
Not him but you genuinely have to be a massive cum guzzling faggot to like any of these.

And you type like a....well, where I come from we call you "faggots", but what's the faggot part of the country's way of saying it?

>better than anything Pantera ever did.

nah

He's right though, hating Dime is try hard shit and you prob don't play an instrument
