The Cars [Elektra, 1978]
Ric Ocasek writes catchy, hardheaded-to-coldhearted songs eased by wryly rhapsodic touches, the playing is tight and tough, and it all sounds wonderful on the radio. But though on a cut-by-cut basis Roy Thomas Baker's production adds as much as it distracts, here's hoping the records get rawer. That accentuated detachment may feel like a Roxy Music move in the first flush of studio infatuation, but schlock it up a little and this band really could turn into an American Queen. B+
Candy-O [Elektra, 1979]
Hooks are mechanical by nature, but the affectlessness of these deserves special mention; only listeners who consider "alienation is the craze" a great insight will find much meaning here. On the other hand, only listeners who demand meaning in all things will find this useless. Cold and thin, shiny and hypnotic, it's what they do best--rock and roll that is definitely pop without a hint of cuteness. Which means that for them "alienation is the craze" may be a meaningful statement after all. B+

The Cars were way more relevant than Eddie Money. Seriously what the hell
I love how Cuckgau called them meaningless because he could not into the emotional range or context they were conveying.
>Benjy wrote and sang the best Cars songs
This.
To the public, Ocasek WAS The Cars. Partly because of his odd last name. Partly because of his unique-for-1978 nerdy cool guy persona, which, in another 5 years time, would be done to death by a thousand other bands.
But Benjamin Orr is the overlooked member of The Cars. I hesitate to say he was 50% or more of the band's success, or even that he was more important to the group than Ocasek. But to the Average Joe who sees The Cars as *only* Ocasek, it's a little more complicated than that.
Did Orr even have a writing credit in the Cars? Even his leads were Ocasek songs.
For real, how the fuck does this dude not have a sticky yet?
>The last band of the 70s
Taking nothing away from them, there may be other contenders for the title. The Sex Pistols (1976 - 1979) may not have sold as many records or had as many hits or made a bunch of heavy rotation MTV videos, but in terms of influence are certainly in the discussion.

The guitar tones on this album are damn near perfect. Distorted in a warm way that still has clarity. Those drums sit perfectly in the mix and the bass is brought up when it needs to be and just adds to the overall feel of the record. Ric did a great goddamn job on this and he's one of the reasons this album sounds as fresh today as it did back in '94.
It's great and now that we've totally come full circle on realizing how embarrassing and dorky Pinkerton really, truly is, blue album stands out as their only big achievement. Ric Ocasek is a hook genius and Weezer's hooks were never as tight or as clear as they were on their debut. He helped them out on Green a lot too but by then Rivers was already an extremely insecure, dishonest songwriter.
It's funny how the narrative that this song and No One Else were character songs, and then Rivers spent their entire sophomore record and the rest of his career confirming that he's actually the dipshit those songs are about.
STICKY RIC
Blue album is great but Pinkerton is their ultimate masterpiece faggot.
Green is also a legit amazing album, some of the greatest melodies Rivers has ever written.
STICK THE RIC STICK THE RIC STICK THE RIC MODDDDDDDDDDDDDDSSSSSSSSSSS
Pinkerton is mostly junk. Pink Triangle is the biggest standout. Weezer had absolutely no reason to trust their instincts this early, it was a total fucking blowout. Now that basically the entirety of Songs From the Black Hole has leaked out in some form or another, I can safely say that would've been a worse record, but at least it would've been a more ambitious and sympathetic failure. That being said, if music writers would've had to review "Dude, We're Finally Landing" if would have been an even worse bloodbath.
Instead, Pinkerton is a totally unfocused collection of songs that oscillate between being embarrassingly twee and being self-destructive and amateurish.
Rivers might have one day been a real talent but he was convinced he had matured and arrived after their power pop debut, and he was right to hide after it. I do wish he could have channeled his energy in a different way than making Weezer the most surface-level and cynical band of all time, but hey, I get it.
It's honestly hard to trust anyone who is that big of a KISS fan. It's so easy to trace the line from Rivers Cuomo, huge KISS fan, to Rivers Cuomo, guy who is covering Toto's Africa and doing the Pork & Beans video.
It's unbelievable too that the Melvins squeezed so many good records out, King Buzzo is lucky his KISS-addled brain didn't start to melt until he was done being relevant.
Bury me in a Weezer coffin.
the ghost of ric ocasek will haunt Yea Forums until he gets a sticky
Pinkerton is amazingly written ablum containing their best songs, Pink Triangle is great, but are you gonna tell me that "Falling For You" isn't the real gem on that album?
Good Life? Tired Of Sex? All of the songs are great
There are redeemable things about the album but it's covered in garbage lyrics. Which is so shameful, considering that it's supposedly the true unadulterated vision and will of Rivers Cuomo. He poured all of himself into the record and the lyrics to The Good Life came out? That's brutal to think about.
Morrissey
Any guy who is able to marry Paulina Porizkova in her prime and have children with her deserves a sticky.
F
>but it's covered in garbage lyrics
They are raw and honest and have several double-meanings and clever word plays, they can be surely awkward, but they are by far the best lyrics Rivers has written in his career.
The music itself shouldn't be ignored, Rivers' passionate and effective performance shouldn't be ignored.
Yeah they're raw in the same way that hamburger meat is. I'm not saying he didn't try, I'm saying what he produced is bad. I can stand a lot of lyrics. Even the Brian Eno technique that he and David Byrne use where the words are derived from scatting I don't have a problem with.
It's admirable that Rivers supposedly was just super honest but it didn't work in his favor. El Scorcho is hilarious. It's funny, and hard to listen to.
Thanks for engaging me on this and not being a dipshit.
Biggest adam's apple in the biz.
indeed
Pink Triangle is a shitty meme song. The actual standout on that album is Tired of Sex. Everything else is fucking cringy. Actually, that song is cringy, too, but at least it rocks. Weezer should have unironically broken up after the blue album.
The only thing amazing about Pinkerton is how many people continue to fawn over some incel whining about wanting to fuck Japanese teenagers for 40 minutes.
Tired of Sex is cringier than Pink Triangle by a factor of five.
>Yea Forums in 2019
t. will never produce an Alan Vega or Bad Brains album

Dick Dale earned his.
