Is there any guitar virtuoso who actually made great music at the same time? I really love playing guitar and I tried listening to some masters like Vai and Satriani but I just can't. Their music says nothing to me. Some good ideas here and there but ultimately every song turns into a 'hey look what I can do' wank. Especially Malmsteen, that guy fucking sucks

What's his name , the Spanish guy who popularized classical guitar

If you're talking metal then it doesn't get better than Jason Becker
but you should look into American Primitivism (Robbie Basho, John Fahey, Leo Kottke)

Paco de lucia. Unfortunately op rock doesn’t really offer a lot of good stuff for guitar virtuosos. I’d look at guys such as paco, joe pass, Chet Atkins, and anyone similar

im a drummer so idk what is actually really technical guitar play, but the whole dance of the flames album by guruguru is magnificent.

i feel like this whole song is a continuously evolving guitar solo, but it is so melodic and beautiful. "shredding" metal solos are usually the worst parts of songs for me, but i can listen to shit like this all day, something like maggot brain or kawabata makoto stuff etc

No I was thinking more of segovia

Check out Ian Thornley from Big Wreck

John Fahey

Santana
Billy Squier
Uli Jon Roth
Takanaka Masayoshi

you're not going to like most of almost anybodies work but there's a song or two to dig for from most any. i wouldn't even call it wank effect with most guys so much as it's "a guy with a drum machine" vs a layered sound. it's just them and nothing else worth listening to. works on something like this youtube.com/watch?v=mDZuNM3HmU4 but singular doesn't work for everything.

could spend a lifetime just on chet atkins and branching out from all the people he played with. same goes for leo fender, glenn campbell, and roy clark

Holy shit this song is fucking great. thanks fren

Prince

Steve Howe
Hendrix
Alan Holdsworth

Van Halen
Possibly Holdsworth if that's your thing
Nuno Bettencourt?

Yeah, we're in the age of showmanship. None of them even tried.

Maybe segovia and les paul but les is pushing it

Yeah Hendrix did great shit and there is no reason to be contrarian about it. That blues album is A+

Yngwie Malmsteen is great. Suck a dick.

electric guitar is meant to be the lead instrument in a horn ensemble, rock kind of sucks
