For example, a person learns to play jazz, do you think they should keep it to themselves because it's a dead art form?

nah they gotta find people to play with irl because those cutting sessions really help as a form of personal expression

No. First off, it’s only a dead art form in terms of commercial viability. Even then, that’s arguable.

Secondly, plenty of people train to be able to play jazz, even if playing jazz for a living isn’t their main ambition. It’s one of the hardest styles to master and so for that reason, if you are proficient in jazz you will be able to play proficiently in most other styles (rock, metal, classical, funk, etc.) without much difficulty.

A lot of the pro musicians who play in the backing bands of touring pop artists are jazz trained.
