I was just listening to White Pony and the s/t the other day for the first time in years.
I was very positively surprised by how well both of those albums have aged and how removed they now seem from the whole nu-metal thing(though even at the time it was clear Deftones were operating on a level way beyond anything fucking Korn and Limp Bizkit could ever come up with). If those albums came out today people would be talking about goth rock and post-hardcore when discussing them.

I would honestly argue that Deftones’ main genre is post-hardcore. Even when I listen to Adrenaline and Around the Fur, albums which people say are nu-metal all the time, I think of post-hardcore and the influence Quicksand, Helmet and Hum had on their sound
