Think of arpeggios, interval oriented riffs, string skipping, tremolopicking, diatonic and non-diatonic passages. There's a lot of different styles out there though. Varg had lessons on many of his songs online. The opening riff of Darkthrones Quintessence is also a real eyeopener that can show you how simple and powerful riffs can be at the same time. One of Ulver's guitarists has a few riffs from Nattens Madrigal online. Learn songs and incorporate their ideas.

hitting notes on the lower strings, at lower frets, your wrist should be bent at almost 90 degrees, and your elbow tucked in towards your torso.

If you want to learn jazz, I just recommend you take music Theory courses at your local Community College(saves $).
You'll eventually learn about extended chords on top of the foundational material. Use this as a springboard to interpret particular jazz methodologies, not all jazz musicians were classically trained so they may have some bizarre terminology they made up.
