Explain Daniel Johnston fandom/cult please.
>Can't sing
>I find out poor guy had severe mental illness
Where do I start in his discography?
I saw Hi How Are You Daniel Johnston? I feel for the guy but like the comment section.
I have seen him championed a bit here way before his death. I didn't care but now I want to understand.

He’s Level 4 music. You seem like you’re still Level 2. Try Tonetta

Kurt Cobain liked him
That's really it
I like some Nirvana but so what
nah, that's not it or else other artists he liked would get the same level of appreciation. you very rarely see any mention of the vaselines, the meat puppets, or lead belly here. cobain is definitely how most people found out about johnston in the first place though.
He was some Texan autist who made the sort of crappy bedroom music a twelve year old with a microphone would improvise.
Some local bands took pity on him and acted like he was a legit musician, in some sort of make-a-wish feelgood trip. The movement kinda grew.
Not even hating on the guy. Just explaining what was going on.
What are these levels you speak of?
watch his documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, its good for understanding
So I watch that first or listen to his music first
who the fuck cares about a retarded documentary just listen to his music
go with hi, how are you or songs of pain to start
>dont watch his documentary just listen to his must known stuff instead
why not do both retard
Trying this hard to into DJ because he croaked. Pick an album and listen to it. If you like what you hear, pick another. RIP GENTLE DANNY.
Damn
Music isn't some strange riddle that needs to be cracked. You hear something, you like it. It's that simple.
I literally only first discovered him back in like 2009 when I heard a cover of "Wicked World" by this weeb pop punk band
youtube.com
It's pretty banger but you sure as hell can tell the music video is from 2008
I discovered him through his album 1990. It is his more hi-fi album I believe. I just like the intimacy of the album.
Can't fathom why Daniel Johnston was super accesible for me
He’s Ariel Pink but talented
Walking the Cow is his best song. Try that one first.
Story of an Artist, Peek-a-Boo, Hey Joe, True Love Will Find You in the End and Some Things Last a Long Time should convince you of his songwriting chops and give you the curiosity and patience to let his other stuff grow on you
