Filipino music historically was a synthesis of its colonial rulers. So from the Spanish, you got rondallas, crooning love songs (haranas and kumindam, Francisco Santiago as its pioneer), choir and religous music (think of the Philippine Madrigal singers, choral groups like the Philippine Meistersingers, or groups like Bukas-Palad). Levi Celerio and Ernani Cuenco come into mind as good mid-century starting points. From the Americans, you got pop music and rock - most notably Manila sound in the 70s which was our own version of city pop with APO Hiking Society, Hajji Alejandro, Sharon Cuneta. Folk music like pic related and Asin also became popular as it had in the US. Then in the 90s you had an alt-rock explosion with Eraserheads that continued on into the 2000s with Sugarfree, Ang Bandang Shirley, Moonstar88, etc. Now like in the US, you have hip-hop and corporate bedroom pop dominating the charts.

For the modern Filipino Classical tradition, you start with Nicanor Abelardo's kundimans then move into Antonio J. Molina's impressionist pieces, Antonio Buenaventura, and Felipe Padilla de Leon if you're still interested. Jose Maceda if you're into ethnomusicology and electronic music.

Mindanao has all of the most southern-influenced music like kulintang, almost like the Indonesian gamelan.

In general, Filipino music might seem terrible and contrived on the surface but if there are some real gems deep down.
Of course this doesn't singers like Lea Salonga, Regine Velasquez, Sarah Geronimo, etc
