I can't get over these vocals. Why are they singing like that? Are they fucking with me?

Pretty sure it's David Byrne inspired. He's doing that 'wacky charismatic frontman' thing

Same, he sounds like cats fucking, can't deal with it

And the worst part is that the actual music is pretty good. The vocals ruin it.

Because it's funny

yeah I wish the vocals throughout the album were more like near dt, mi

I feel like a pleb agreeing to this but yeah, I feel the same way.
I like abrasive, harsh music but this is just too unpleasantly wacky.

The way they're singing is pretty standard for the kinds of post-punk, noise rock, no wave, and math rock bands they were inspired by, so it's never phased me. To give you some context, this is the kind of stuff they're drawing from:

Forced industry plants, this is just reddit the band

The vast majority of good art rock has challenging, divisive vocals that sound better upon multiple listens. This is one part of why I think this album is actually going to be remembered fondly in the future.

It sounds like they're taking the piss tho. Like this is all a big joke to them.

Plebs will never understand post-punk. Don't even bother trying to explain it to them.

I like post-punk but this is just straight goofy.

So? Does it have to be super serious? Battles, one of their key influences, even used chipmunked vocals and it still sounded good

t. listened to Unknown Pleasures once

No, but when you listen to bands like the Butthole Surfers or The Frogs, you know they're joking around and not taking themselves too seriously. You don't write a song about serious topics like the contaminated water in Flint, Michigan and then sound like you're being fingered in the ass.

how do you have this picture of my wife

Go to bed Richard, you fucked that up with your drug habit, remember?

Since when is it not okay to be grotesque and hysterical about actual topics? The greatest achievement of Butthole Surfers was that they completely blurred the lines between serious and silly rock music.

Because there is something wrong with him. Have you seen him?

This is the only album that I've listened to where the vocals were so grating that it turned me off completely. I thought it was a meme but everyone was right

Honestly I get flashes of Les Claypool in his voice. Esp on bmbmbm

it's actually shit. US maple and beefheart wipe the floor with this crap

this, fuck this gay shit

They're literally a talented young noise rock band playing cool music. Feel more asspain about them doing cooler stuff than you'll ever do, you bitter little cunts

No offense, but I really can't fucking stand prog metal dorks who don't know anything about noise rock, and who try to compare everything to shit like Mr. Bungle, Primus, Tool, and Dream Theater.

I don't get that at all. It sounds creepy to me, but not in an obvious way. It definitely does sound silly to an extent as well, but it's unsettling and when placed on top of the music they're playing I don't think it sounds like a joke at all.

Also, I've listened to interviews with them and Geordie has a pretty strange speaking voice as well, so I don't even think he's trying that hard to put on a wacky/artsy singing voice, it's just kinda natural for him.

I agree with that. I've actually shown Black Midi to a few friends and they keep calling them a Metal band and make references to Bungle and stuff lke Dillinger Escape Plan. I keep telling them there's more of a Shellac, Talking Heads and Jesus Lizard sort of influence but they don't really know shit about that stuff.

That being said, I also hear slight shades of Claypool in Geordie's voice, but it's not THAT overt IMO. I actually think the vocals are one of the best parts of this album. They're truly unique and original.

Only a true pleb who cares about muh beautiful singing voice would be put off by the vocals on this album
AOTY

They're like if you gave some cavemen instruments and told them to make Joy As An Act Of Resistance

Look up a video of them. They're extremely talented. You clearly have never listened to noise rock, no wave, or math rock.

jesus fucking christ i hate post-modernism

Talent doesn't equal quality.

They are just average alternative rock-styled vocals. At least the instrumental is God-tier. Pure math rock. But I know about someone with even weirder and absolutely schizophrenic vocals: Pic related, the ultimate pleb-filter.

I don't think you understand what that term means.

I assumed when you compared them to cavemen, you were attacking their musical ability. It seems to me that you're trying to move the goalposts.

hurr durr singing is a meme retard noises is just as valid art the classical masters are fucking retards

You know honestly the first time I listened to primus was frizzle fry and I thought they sounded more like a post-punk/noise rock band than a metal band.

You're a faggot. Get some taste or go back to Radiohead.

yeah, everyone should just sing like frank sinatra as that's the only good singing, right? Jesus christ your a faggot. Get over yourself.

We don't know what the classical masters sounded like when they sang, because we lacked recording equipment until the end of the 19th century.

If for some reason you're referring to the early singers of popular music, most of them were known for the power or character of their vocals, rather than their actual singing ability. Bluesmen like Son House, Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Lead Belly, and later Howlin' Wolf were known for their expressiveness and grit. I do love soul singers like Marvin Gaye and pop singers like Edith Piaf, but something tells me you weren't referring to them.

the vocals are actually the best part of this album. strip them away and you’d just have another unremarkable math rock band.
still, could’ve been a much better project on the whole. they have a lot of room to improve.

>implying radiohead is worse than this ring ding waaah waaaah gagagagagaggaga over two chords bullshit

what the fuck do either of those bands have to do with post-punk

Interesting considering Frizzle Fry is their most "Metal" sounding album. That being said, I would imagine Claypool is into stuff like that which you mentioned, but I really don't know much about his influences beyond Rush, Frank Zappa and The Residents.

I really wouldn't consider black midi to be post punk. They're post hardcore with mathy and noisy elements, also a bit of classic prog influence imo

more than black midi ever will d e s u

he just missed the charisma

When is Scaruffi gonna review this?

that wasnt even sung by geordie the vocals sound normal on that track

its fucking hilarious
OH SUCH A PURPOSE

>I really wouldn't consider black midi to be post punk
wrong. the record have post punk influences.
>They're post hardcore with mathy and noisy and which genre do you think was an influence to that music btw?

They're influenced, but that doesn't mean they're that genre. That's like calling all alternative music from the 80s onward punk because they all listened to the ramones
