one of the big appeals of Tool used to be this sense of mystery. Who were these esoteric, shady weirdos? Rarely interviewed or photographed, performed in semidarkness, seems to have access to ridden knowledge and dedicated to their craft. And seemed to be completely uninterested in the trappings of fame. I find it really jarring for MJK to be exposed as just another loud-mouth, edgy boomer posting shitty memes on the Internet.

Weirdly enough I felt this way about a lot of nu / alt metal shit back in the early 00s. I feel like it was a combination of my newness to the whole music thing and the media still being primitive enough that there was this gulf between audiences and the music world that artists had to sort of project across (which explains the overegged edginess and for lack of a better word "corporate" nature of it where things were more like logos that had to be memorable because people might not have the opportunity to see them all that regularly)
