Sun Kil Moon - Benji

Thoughts?

Boring "my wife died please give me your money" shit.

this

it's no 'i also want to die in new orleans'

Good record. Very honest and confessional. "Dogs" is a really cool song. Can't help but go through your own romantic history when listening to it.

Is it weird that I like Red House Painters but can't get into SKM at all? It really doesn't click for me.

Not even Ghosts of the Great Highway?

He has one good song and it's Blue Heron and only because of gears of war fuck sun kil moon

That's actually my favorite album from SKM, but it still doesn't vibe with me as well as a lot of RHP albums.

i

same, user

They’re pretty different. OP’s pic is more like a mark solo album

saw him tonight, what a show

s... sure my romantic history haha

haha

one of the best albums of this decade
don't put mark in the same category as that hack

i could live in hope > carrie and lowell > benji > a crow looked at me > down colorful hill

That album is fucking amazing.
If you look back at his releases before that album you can see him working on all the things that would be - almost by miracle - perfected in Benji. That album feels almost impossible. The albums after that have been sadly horrible though.

It is good, but not his best.
Common as light, universal themes, april, ghosts of the great highway, old ramon, down colorful hill, and rollercoaster are all just as good if not better. It is one of his best works, but kozelek is a man of many best works and benji is his most overrated album.
Phil will never be in anywhere near the same league as mark. He's a dumb frail dingus
Boooooo
It sure isn't. Bay of kotor is kino
This
Nope. Its not weird at all mark changed a lot since rhp
Not even ghosts of the great highway. Well apparently a little bit
No, but I am loving gears 5. Have you played it yet?
Ah yes. Good favorite pick
Same. I just wish he wouldn't borrow large amounts of money from me
Double same
Mhmmm
Lucky, what'd he play or more importantly how was the heckling
Lel
Yes lel
This and this
I miss being able to enjoy I could live in hope. My outlook as changed so much it just doesn't reasonate with me anymore

Hehe

Benji is far better than all those albums except perhaps Ghosts of the Great Highway.

Phil while doing the Microphones, particularly the Glow part 2, is on definitely on par with Mark's best.

I never could get into Phil's work from a person point of view. Phil certainly isn't bad, but his voice is too thin for my tastes.
I understand the dismissal of everything aside from ghosts, because of tge length of some project and the emotional stasis on others( ie: the unchanging depression of dch or the consistent sorrow of april bar harper road), however I'd argue that kozelek's most intimate, sincere, and compositionally interesting moments are longer songs usually from post-benji releases such as bay of kotor, birds of film, tonight the sky, with a sort of grace I walked to the bathroom to cry, over half of common as light (especially god bless ohio), the reason I see benji as the most overrated is that aside from one song it doesn't have any 10 minute plus songs which is around the perfect length for a kozelek song as it always for him to flesh out his narratives in the most natural sounding and rewarding way possible. But I understand your opinion its respectable benji is great. I wouldn't change anything about it. I just prefer the longer songs

I just wish mark did a full band version or a live version of perils from the sea. The live version of you missed my heart is stunning and mak kozelek and desertshore was phenomenal

that's not the concept of Benji at all, the album is about Mark coming to terms with his inevitable ageing and observing that everyone he once knew or knew of is getting older and dying too

this is my dinner is unironically my favourite skm record

adore every second of it

For me it's Ghost of the Great Highway.
