The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
The movie ending was better
The End of Evangelion is the movie ending.
Also, much like Ideon, the Eva TV ending and movie ending are more or less the same. There's even many EoE scenes you can see on the TV end episodes (Misato and Ritsuko dead, for example)
Eversince
something vastly overrated while the superior followup (rebuild) is often overlooked
swans - to be kind
Rebuild has yet to conclude though. Next year (if it doesn't get delayed).
I was under the impression Rebuild 1 and 2 were well received, but 3 got mixed reviews.
If you ask me, it's kinda similar to the original TV series, the 1st and 2nd arcs were well received, but last 2 episodes got backlash.
I don't really think we're going to get another movie like The End of Evangelion, though. But I expect the last Rebuild to be a visual fest, like the past movies were, and I expect some crazy Anno trolling, again.
3.33 only got mixed reviews because it branched out in its own direction and people wanted more of the same
the stuff shown in it and in the 3.0+1.0 10 minute leak (mainly the ever-evolving angels/mass produced eva lines) are cooler to me than anything in EoE
Obviously rebuild is more polished but I personally don't see how the content it delivers can match the original.
>are cooler to me than anything in EoE
I dunno, nothing topped the Eva 02 vs Eva Series fight for me yet. Also let's see if they can achieve a climax as good as Third Impact in EoE.
Impacts have become kind of diluted in Rebuild though, between the near 3rd impact, the actual 3rd impact, the near 4th impact... yeah it has become kind of common "oh look it's another impact". But again, I have faith Anno will do something surprising.
i bet you thought the star wars prequels were better than the OT too.
I never got the hype for Be Invoked. I much preferred the TV ending.
never seen any star wars but the first one
Here's my take on the movie. Evangelion nerds, let me know if this is a common interpretation.
The original ending to the series was perfect; the only unresolved plot points involved macguffins that nobody cared about anyways (the angel in Gendo's hand, the spear of Longinus). It did not need to be "fixed." The idea of rejecting instrumentality as a metaphor for escapism was interesting, but it conflicts with the series' central theme that our personal shortcomings can be overcome by lowering our social inhibitions. The movie ruins the anime.
In other words, the musical equivalent is your favorite band reuniting and releasing a legacy-tarnishing new album.
You're wrong, the movie ending is the same ending + some extra context.
The original movie scenario was there from the beginning (Ritsuko and Misato shown dead in the same way, Gendou telling Rei it's time to start instrumentality, Shinji starting 3rd impact).
Shinji rejects instrumentality too in the TV series. It's when the "backstage" scenery starts cracking and the coral floor appears (which is also in EoE, scene with Shinji talking with Rei and Kawou).
REEEEE FUCK ALL YOU NETFLIX EVA FANS REEE
Is there a more based pleb filter than the last two episodes of Evangelion
I think you might have forgotten how much the TV ending leaves completely unexplained. It only makes sense once you know what happens in EoE. It's also the same ending. Congratulations is leaving the soup.
>The original movie scenario was there from the beginning (Ritsuko and Misato shown dead in the same way, Gendou telling Rei it's time to start instrumentality, Shinji starting 3rd impact).
isn't all this shit only in the directors cut which was made in retrospect?
Only 21-24 have director's cut versions. I'm pretty sure the airing versions of 25 and 26 have stayed the same.
No, the anime ending and the movie ending are in conflict with each other. I am not convinced by the fan theory that they are reconcilable. Even if the creators intended them to be complimentary (which as far as I know is unproven), authorial intent does not matter. As with any piece of art, I limit my interpretation to the text itself.
What exactly in the TV ending conflicts with EoE?
Instrumentality is framed as good in the TV ending, and it is unequivocally presented as bad in the movie.
The shit in the TV ending is all about rediscovering his identity and embracing reality even when it's full of conflict because it's the only place natural meaning exists. None of that is at all compatible with instrumentality.
Explain. I don’t immediately disagree but I want to hear the argument.
Okay, I understand that instrumentality could be both good and bad for Shinji because it resolves conflicts but also causes him to lose their identity. I'm thinking in terms of how instrumentality is portrayed to the audience as an omniscient observer. It is important to delineate that Evangelion is never shown exclusively from Shinji's point of view. There is a major discrepancy in the way instrumentality is presented to the viewer compared to the TV series and the movie. In the TV series the tone is triumphant; in the movie it is horrifying and uncomfortable.
Instrumentality starts at the beginning of Episode 26 on EoTV. Shinji goes through most of the same thoughts as he does in the movie.
There's also a fake world in both EoTV and EoE (the fake "normal life" with Shinji waking up for school, Misato being a teacher, etc, and the Live Action sequence in EoE, which is a world without Shinji). In both of these, Shinji realizes it's not the real deal, and that even if it means getting hurt, he'd like to go back to being an individual and experience life. That's where instrumentality is rejected, in EoTV it's when Shinji finally says "I want to be here", and in EoE is when Rei says "reality starts when the dream ends" and GNR gets her throat cut open.
Both outcomes are similar: Shinji appears on a primordial ocean coral floor, finally accepting himself, wanting to give life a try again, even if that means feeling pain again.
Another key phrase that's also present in both endings: "Farewell, mother".
What EoE added was "One More Final". The infamous beach scene.
the soundtrack
I understand the theory, and I see that there's certainly circumstantial evidence for it, but I don't believe any of this invalidates my points.
fpbp
Well, you say EoTV portrays instrumentality as a positive, but Shinji is mostly suffering through the whole episode, until the very end, where the scenery literally cracks.
>the superior followup (avenge)
Avenge is no where near as bad as people make it out to be, but Jesus Christ this is the worst take I've ever heard about Evangelion

Something like this maybe
Blackstar probably. It gave a proper end to Bowie's career. I don't think anyone would be satisfied if Reality or The Next Day ended up being his final album.
Based and drainpilled
Rebuild is overproduced and overblown. EVA was good when it was done on a shoestring budget because it forced Anno and the boys to be creative with what they had. You see this with literally every tv show/movie; the less money that they are given, the less stupid shit that they spend it on.
Rebuild is eye candy but unfulfilling to an extreme.
