he over analyzes and repeats himself too much and the series is pretty cheesy, but the pick slanting stuff basically fixed my picking within a week of practicing it. i had the same problems he had with the string hopping thing, but i just never bothered practicing my picking enough to naturally develop a way of feeling my way through fast lines.
im on a private tracker and have some of the premier stuff that you have to pay for, its not really worth it. its just clips of him playing lines at normal speed+slow mo, and there is an accompanied tab that shows what he's playing. don't bother, just understand what pick slanting is, pick a song with a fast line that you want to play, and figure out how to pick it

I have a SSS Strat and a semi-hollow (ES-335 style). If there's anything missing from my collection it's maybe a dedicated guitar for metal but I'm not that hung up on it.
Hollowbodies are cool though. I'd definitely recommend getting one. The sound is different enough that it changes the way I play mine vs. what I play on the Strat. You probably don't need a 7-string, unless you're doing some interesting chordal stuff and you want the extra bass range.

I'm an MSc researcher in compsci but I always had a love for music. I'm working on software to emulate the sound of music playback. Is this a software currently available? Is this something you would use?

I invited 20 music students who play guitar and simulated a 1977 Gibson Les Paul using an Epiphone Les Paul Special and none of them could distinguish which instrument was which. This is a $5000 instrument versus a $150 instrument.
There's a couple of drawbacks, though. You need to know how to play, obviously, but you have to play note-for-note at least a measure of what you're trying to copy. If any bends are involved, it doesn't work fully because none of our testers has been able to reproduce bends with perfect acuity yet. This also extends to things like wah, pitch shifting mid-measure, etc, and delay usually doesn't work but it's a WIP.
I don't plan to market this software, at least not yet. What do you guys think?

Another portion of the software is isolating a pedal. Plug a pedal in, play some notes with all dials zeroed out, then increase them to 50%, play, then 100%, play, and it'll make a virtual pedal that is likewise fooling musicians at my university. Set the number of knobs, play with each knob, and you're good to go.
I'm hoping to make music more accessible by making the sound of a pedalboard and an expensive guitar essentially $0. It's part of my thesis.

Expensive guitars are mostly about reliability and feel. It won't make you better but it will distract you less and you won't always be tuning and adjusting the truss rod.
Expensive amps are pointless unless you play for other people. I wouldn't pay to hear a line 6 spider no matter how good you were.
